My name is Daniel Archer, I'm thirty-four years old, and I can tell you that the woman currently unbuttoning my shirt weighs exactly one hundred and twenty-three pounds.
Not that she asked. They never ask.
Her name is—was?—Simone, and we met two hours ago at a gallery opening in Chelsea where I spent more time calculating the weight of bronze sculptures than actually looking at them. The Giacometti in the corner: forty-seven pounds. The supposedly revolutionary piece made of "reclaimed industrial materials": two hundred and six pounds, which seemed excessive for what was essentially garbage welded together. Simone herself, standing before a canvas that looked like someone had sneezed paint onto it: one hundred and twenty-three pounds, distributed across a five-foot-six frame in a way that made a little black dress seem like an engineering marvel
