Truly a gift from a master therapist

I completed my MSW/CSW four years ago but just now starting as a clinician, I found this book incredibly helpful due to the author's explanation of the prime factors relevant to productive therapy and his narrative of client cases. He makes a sound case for inserting the therapist's warmth and judicious self disclosure into the therapy. This book gave me so much more than my university practicum supervisors.

Great Read!

The therapist's reflection on his session, as well as client input made this book an amazing offering on ways to improve the therapeutic experience for both clients and clinicians. I thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook and took away items to apply in practice.

Dr. Yalom never gets old

This is my second time listening to this book, and I realized how much I missed the first time. So many pearls of wisdom. How I wish more therapists were like him!
(This book is a must read for therapists.)

Must read for every therapist!

I have worked in the field of community mental health for several years in various positions, and I feel like all too often therapists, management, case managers, etc. get overly focused on Numbers and insurance company goals and forget all about the fact that we are people, and we are treating people walking through the door and not numbers. I think this book is a must read for everyone working in a helping profession, especially those of us in community mental health centers.

A game-changing epiphany

This book was assigned to me as a clinical psychology student pursuing my masters degree. I now consider it the single most important text introduced to me in my course of study and traineeship. I feel deep gratitude toward the author for sharing his experience and wisdom so candidly. The content feels to me much like a quality course with a master practitioner. I cannot imagine moving into my profession as a psychotherapist without the gift this book has given me.

Truly a Gift; Therapist's Therapist

Yalom, a master therapist, presents and discusses questions that arise in the consulting room and throughout the ongoing development of anyone who answers the call of serving as a therapist. I'm grateful for his candid disclosure and depth of insight.

Necessary Reading for all therapists

As someone in a counseling masters program, I believe this should be required reading both at entrance and exit. Clear, insightful, and a skilled refutation of the short, EB, insurance loving model of therapy. Yalom proves why love, death, and the here and now are so important.

Good therapy is certainly a gift to all parties!

As others have already pointed out, Dr. Yalom has certainly mastered the art of being a great and sensitive provider of therapy. This is not an easy task, and while many enter the field for various reasons, those that have in mind to further develop themselves personally and professionally, are well-positioned to pass on this gift. Dr. Yalom talks about the critical elements that structure good therapy: empathy, self-disclosure with reason, admitting mistakes, and providing practical guidance. I very much appreciate the time and consideration that Dr. Yalom put into writing this book, and sharing it with anyone interested in the subject.
