Description

Why is profitable growth so hard to achieve and sustain? Most executives manage their companies as if the solution to that problem lies in the external environment - find an attractive market, formulate the right strategy, win new customers. But when Bain & Company's Chris Zook and James Allen (authors of the best-selling Profit from the Core) researched this question, they found that when companies fail to achieve their growth targets, 90 percent of the time the root causes are internal, not external - increasing distance from the front lines, loss of accountability, proliferating processes and bureaucracy, to name only a few. What's more, companies experience a set of predictable internal crises, at predictable stages, as they grow. Even for healthy companies, these crises, if not managed properly, stifle the ability to grow further - and can actively lead to decline.

The key insight from Zook and Allen's research is that managing these choke points requires a "founder's mentality" - behaviors typically embodied by a bold, ambitious founder - to restore the speed, focus, and connection to customers, all of which are lost as companies grow:

  • An insurgent's clear mission and purpose
  • An unambiguous owner mind-set
  • A relentless obsession with the front line

Based on the authors' decade-long study of companies in more than 40 countries, The Founder's Mentality demonstrates the strong relationship between these three traits in companies of all kinds - not just start-ups - and their ability to sustain performance. Through rich analysis and inspiring examples, this book shows how any leader - not only a founder - can instill and leverage a founder's mentality throughout their organization and find lasting, profitable growth.

brochures bore me

Great title, disappointing content... entirely 3rd party indirect research and anecdotes packaged on a standard MBA candidate's business coaching sales pitch brochure. Assumedly the authors are actually authentic small biz founders as well, but you'd never know it by this book. they bring mom real world authenticity or insight, strictly library reference material style... seemingly narrated by an unrelated contract voice actor (nice guy, I'm sure... no visceral ownership of the content.)

Decent messages, terrible narrator

Almost couldn't finish this thanks to the overly dramatic, matter-of-fact, newscaster-like narrator. He just has to pronounce every sentence like it's the most profound idea since sliced bread. Come on, it's 2020, there are better ways to narrate business books. Other than that, there are certainly some interesting research findings and observations presented here.

Inspirational but repetative

Some really good insight here but by about halfway through I felt like it was beating a dead horse.

Inspiration for Leaders

This audiobook is full of stories, examples, and data of companies and leadership teams that have turned stagnant companies around by returning to the founders principles and learning how to use scale and insurgency together to outpace the competition.

As someone in the non profit sector I still found much to like about the examples selected and the points they illustrated.

At times the listening can drone on a little long in places. Perhaps a little more self editing by the authors would have been helpful for the listener.

Explains effective enterprise transformation

Shows the three caveats of scaling up: Overload, slow down and free fall. Most organizations face the three as the scale and need to become effective in tackling these.

Maybe all management books are like this?

Somebody ~please teach this guy the actual pronunciation of 'industry'. His timbre was pleasant, but often the intonation did not actually match the meaning of the words. Also, this should not have been a 6+ hour listen: He was very slow, enunciated far too emphatically, and...paused...a...lot. #gotthemoveslikeShatner
