Description

This is Alterra, where you can be the master of your own castle... or a field hand on a farm. And this is Jack, who wants to make his way to a different continent, hidden in the virtual mist. And this is an ancient quest line, buried under new versions of the game.

Jack's goal: create his own guild. Buy a ship. And set off on the Great Journey. The journey of his life. The dangerous Gravediggers are not the only ones opposing him. Necromancers from sinister Nightmare, elite alpha-citizens, and relic hunters are only a small fraction of the enemies that the First Player will have to face.

In the perilous Wasteland, the drifter Jack finds an abandoned truck, where an old-world game console is hidden. This moment marks the beginning of Jack's path to the lost continent, hidden in the virtual depths of the colossal Alterra. He still isn't aware of the enemies standing in his way. Not only are the guild of Gravediggers and the sinister necromancers of Nightmare against him, but also the secret masters of the game world themselves. The discoveries of ancient quest lines, long buried under new versions of the game, give Jack access to the Dark Service. This is a special branch of character development, which is no longer available in the modern version of the game.

Tron is more of a litrpg than this book, but...

It was a very engrossing book and that makes up for its problems. First off, the game mechanics are irrelevant and completely arbitrary. Serving only to provide some goals for the characters and a way to control the pacing. Main character had an invincible cut everything sword, damage and stats were completely ignored and combat sucked overall on every front. And nothing makes sense from a game perspective or any perspective. But its engrossing enough that I only occassionally have time to think on this.

Terrible writing

I would not recommend this book. The book reads like a middle school class assignment and the author was struggling to reach the minimum required words.

Great read for rpg fans

This book is good. The plot is good and the acting is good. A lot of the bad reviews say, " poorly written," while it is true that Novak doesn't litter the background with endless purple proses the story and preformance are solid.

Give it a few chapters, it's better than you think

The book has a fast but steady pace.
The only flaw is the author forgot to write into the opening chapters why we should care about the world. That will develop on it's own if you stick it out, and because the decent pace you aren't slogging to get to it anyways so the investment to stick it out isn't much and it pays off.
It presents the virtual world as a virtual world and doesn't hide limitations like NPC dialog script. But it also presents the world as a grand work of fiction created by multiple collaborating writers and Jack is trying to discover the fascinating story.

Left Me Wanting To Read The Next Book

The story is good and although it follows many books of the same type.
It kept me wanting to continue and see what was going to happen next.
The ending also left me wanting to get into the next book.
I would recommend this series of books.

Excellent listen for those who played MMORPG

Game world:
- Developed Factions
- Well laid out economy
Real world:
- Developed status and Factions
- Economy is, ok in this book

This first book lays out the base of what the player goes through. It touches on some of the aspects of player griefing etc. But it's a really neat mix of what would happen if life in a VR game is literally better than real life.

Another fun LitRPG Book

Personally, I find these Russian LitRPG books fascinating because they give a unique insight into how Russians can view issues and problems differently than Western thinkers. However, there are times when it can be outright shocking as well!

Good story

I've found this story to be entertaining. The congrats between life in and out of the game are interesting, the characters are likable, and the plot is imaginative and fun to listen to.
My only quibble is with the authors constant use of "XP" and "level" as interchangable terms. But that doesn't make it a bad story, just makesmme a huge nerd.

okay

Not really my thing. Took me a long time to get into the story. Probably more interesting for gamers.
