    Description

"Decker is one of the most unusual detectives any novelist has dreamed up." (Washington Post)

Amos Decker is the Memory Man. Following a football-related head injury that altered his personality, Decker is now unable to forget even the smallest detail - as much a curse as it is a blessing. And in number one New York Times best-selling author David Baldacci's gripping new thriller, Decker's life might be about to change again....

Something sinister is going on in Baronville. The rust belt town has seen four bizarre murders in the space of two weeks. Cryptic clues left at the scenes - obscure Bible verses, odd symbols - have the police stumped.

Amos Decker and his FBI colleague Alex Jamison are in Baronville visiting Alex's sister and her family. It's a bleak place: a former mill and mining town with a crumbling economy and rampant opioid addiction. Decker has been there only a few hours when he stumbles on a horrific double murder scene.

Then the next killing hits sickeningly close to home. And with the lives of people he cares about suddenly hanging in the balance, Decker begins to realize that the recent string of deaths may be only one small piece of a much larger scheme - with consequences that will reach far beyond Baronville.

Decker, with his singular talents, may be the only one who can crack this bizarre case. Only this time - when one mistake could cost him everything - Decker finds that his previously infallible memory may not be so trustworthy after all...

This was supposed to be a VACATION!!!!

Book four in David Baldacci's Memory Man series is a terrific addition to the series.
This book is fast paced and highly unpredictable. With in the first five minutes of starting this book the story takes off and there is a head long rush until it comes to the end.
Decker and partner Jamison take a vacation to visit Jamison's sister and niece. On their first night Decker spots something going on it a neighboring house. He discovers two dead bodies.
The medical examiner screws up the autopsy. Decker and Jamison begin an investigation and are almost killed in a dilapidated trailer when it's set on fire and the doors intentionally jammed. They managed to escape but Decker gets struck in the head with flying debris. Will he still be the Memory Man? It doesn't seem to be quite so sharp... Someone obviously doesn't want them poking around.
This is a very depressed area, drugs and theft run rampant and people overdosing on opiates so common the local police carry Narcan (opioid reversal drug) as part of their regular equipment.
And all this happens in the first two or so hours. I won't say any more, I don't want to spoil this book for someone else.
Super writing, great character development. As always Baldacci continues to write a well thought out novel of twists, turns and suspense.
Kyf Brewer and Orlagh Cassidy make a really good narrating duo.
    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

    Eye-Rolling Ridiculous and Disappointing

I typically really like David Baldacci’s writing. I have thoroughly enjoyed his character Amos Decker in the past. However, this book was so completely shallow and contrived I could barely stand to finish it!! I would’ve returned it, but I had accidentally bought a book I’d already heard and returned it, and didn’t want to seem like a “chronic returner”. Anyway, I usually trust reviews to a certain extent. But honestly, unless you’re given this book for free and have absolutely nothing else to listen to, I DONT RECOMMEND IT!

Baldacci in back with memory man Amos Decker!

Fallen in Book 4 in David Baldacci's super cop Amos Decker series. Both the novel and the narration earn solid 5 star ratings. (Pay no attention to the three early low ratings which were posted before the persons could have listened to the audio novel.) Narration by Kyf Brewer and Orlagh Cassidy is outstanding although I still prefer Ron McLarty to Brewer for the male voices.

Fallen is set in the fictional town of Baronville in northwestern Pennsylvania where Amos Decker and his partner Alex Jamison are on vacation visiting Alex's sister and her husband and young daughter. It is no surprise that the economically depressed area is suffering from abuse of opiate drugs and the violent crimes associated with their procurement and distribution. The novel features action, intense suspense, and plot twists. Do not assume you know who the good guys and bad guys are until the end of the novel.

No author does a better job of developing characters than David Baldacci. All of his six adult series (The Camel Club, King and Maxwell, Amos Decker, John Puller, Will Robie, and A. Shaw) books are standalone, but the first book in a series should be read first to better understand the wonderful protagonist characters. One can never go wrong with a David Baldacci novel! (There are 38 Baldacci books in my Audible library.)

    Not Baldacci’s Best

I buy all of Baldacci’s books and listen or read right away. I almost quit listening to this one midway through. The female narrator was very hard to listen to; especially when she portrayed Zoe. Now, this duet does all of Baldacci’s books and this is the first time I have felt this way.

The other bit I didn’t like was the melodrama between Amos and the female lead. It was too contrived.

Finally, the plot is too far fetched.

All that, with some effort, I finished and ended up sort of enjoying it. May be a little hesitant next time he releases in this series though. An abridged version of this book would probably be pretty good.

    Baldacci?????

I've read almost every Baldacci book and I love them. this book is disjointed and hard to follow. Character development is weak and I don't care about them. Amos Decker needs to change direction or disappear. Sorry!!

Worst episode of Scooby Doo ever.

The Mystery Gang goes on vacation, foiling a depressing, psychotic conspiracy that involves local business leaders pedaling drugs to the most unlikeable collection of background characters ever. Then in true Scooby Doo fashion, the gang gathers at the end to explain the plot, collection of clues, and force closure in the most improbable and strangest two chapter 1970s-esque wrap up I have ever been subjected to. Jinkies!

    Good book, but...

I liked this story a lot, except for one thing. Decker’s partner was way too much of a wimp and too generally clueless for a trained cop. They talked about having each other’s back, but it was he who figured things out, and made plans he wouldn’t share with her. She, on the other hand, screamed when she should have been a true detective, and otherwise played the damsel in distress. Something tells me all of Baldacci’s heroes are men. Women are mere coffee carriers.

    Sadly, very cheesy

I usually like Baldacci but lately, it feels like his books are written super quickly without as much thought to detail as he usually gives. This whole book was pretty cheesy as well. And seriously, half of the population in the story dies, like watching some cheap budget action film.
    Sigh.

We are all Responsible for our own Decisions & the Outcomes of those Decisions

Another David Baldacci layer upon layer rendition. I really enjoy his books (9 so far) because they are complex with multiple layers & fascinating storylines plus plenty of action.

I gave only a 4 star rating this time because I found the first half of the book was rather depressing & dismal which I know was necessary to create the foundation that supported the story. However, I did find it a little hard to listen to. The second half picked up speed & pull me right back into Baldacci’s imagination.

Not as good as the other Decker books

I couldn't believe how the female characters all came across as irritating and dim--even his sidekick, Alex. There was also too much exposition as Amos had to explain everything to everyone...a disappointment. Orlagh Cassidy's voices all sounded the same, or weird. Disappointing.

    Die Welt ist schlecht?

    Nein!
