    Description

From Iris Johansen, the nationally acclaimed New York Times best-selling author of And Then You Die and The Ugly Duckling, comes her most electrifying novel yet.

Forensic sculptor Eve Duncan has a rare - and bittersweet - gift. Her unique ability to reconstruct the identity of the long dead from their skulls has helped bring closure to parents of missing children. For Eve, whose own daughter was murdered and her body never found, the job is a way of coming to terms with her personal nightmare. When she is approached by billionaire magnate John Logan to reconstruct the face of an adult murder victim, only his promise of a sizable charitable contribution persuades her to accept. It's a simple bargain, yet it's the most dangerous one she'll ever make.

The warning signs are clear. There is the specially equipped lab Eve is taken to in a country inn turned high-tech security fortress in rural Virginia. Surveillance cameras monitor her every move. The telephones are tapped. And then there is Logan himself - by turns ruthless, charming, and desperate.

But it's too late for Eve to walk out. The skull has begun to reveal its shocking identity, trapping her in a frightening web of murder and deceit. To free herself, she has no choice but to expose that identity and to trust Logan, the man who put her life in danger, a man who may see her as an expendable pawn.

    Great story; poor narration

This was the first Iris Johanson book I've read. She tells a great story with many sub-plots and surprising twists. If I could rate the story by itself, I would give it 4 1/2 stars. I'll be downloading many more of Johanson's books. Unfortunately, the narrator of this book earns only 1 star. There are many characters in the book and she uses pretty much the same voice for all of them. The other problem was that she took only the slightest pause between chapters and never gave an indication that a scene had changed. These things made it difficult to follow the story and I found myself having to go back several times to pick up a lost story line.

    Over Abridged!

I should have returned this book because the fact that it was an abridged version ruined it for me.

There is a lot to be said for the pace of a story; abridging can ruin that. This story seemed very disjointed to me - it’s started off with an intriguing premise and then all of a sudden everyone is running for their lives. Huh?

Too much was missing... I could tell it was condensed.

    First Rate!

If you could sum up The Face of Deception in three words, what would they be?

    Political, Thriller, Trapped

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It was a great listen for sure..At first I was not to sure if I was going to get into the political setting part of the listen but was intrigued with the plot and taken in with the characters. I love forensic books..that is why I chose this book to listen.

Have you listened to any of Jill Hennessy’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Never listened to Jill Hennessy but she made the listen very remarkable and will be looking forward to hearing her in the future.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

"No one will believe you or hear you scream"

    Any additional comments?

Looking forward to hearing more of this series in time.

    Enthralling and entertaining.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Face of Deception to be better than the print version?

No, they are both equally good.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I love Eve Duncan and of course Joe Quinn. John Logan also was my personal favorite.

Which character – as performed by Jill Hennessy – was your favorite?

All the major characters. I felt she could transition from one to the other, to help sort who is talking etc...

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    Made me nervous and engaged.

    I hate abridged audiobooks

I gave this 4 stars for overall, performance and story because all 3 were good. I just hate abridged books, half the story is cutout and so much is missed. I have read the book so know this is true, but if you haven't read the book and just listen to this abridgement you wouldn't be aware of the missing parts The story flowed nicely

    abridged with terrible narration

i don't understand the purpose of abridged books. seems stupid to start the unabridged books at book 3. i need to read the books in order and i want the unabridged.
the narrator tries to mask a strong new england accent but it comes out often. Eve is from Atlanta. she wouldn't drop her "r"s like a new englander. it is distracting.
the abridged version makes Logan sound like more of an ass than the regular version. A lot of women, like me, do not understand why someone would like a jerk, so it's hard for me to like Eve. She is supposed to be a strong woman but she allows men to walk all over her and she likes them. To me, this makes her seem weak and irritating.

Books are good. Main character is frustrating.

I decided to re- listen to these books, while I wait for more credits. I made it to book number 19 before I decided to restart and leave reviews for them all.

OK, so the Eve Duncan series is really good but also slightly frustrating. It’s really good because the storyline is good, the bad guys are good, and the new characters are always good. But the frustrating part is the main character, Eve Duncan. She’s stubborn and tenacious and never backs down, which are all great qualities in a main character. But she also does stupid things like get her self in danger which causes other people get hurt. And although she has standards for other people when it comes to herself she’ll make the exact same mistakes and nobody can call her out on it. She’s pretty much a big hypocrite and everyone builds this soft nest around her, accepts it, and nobody questions it.

I find myself rolling my eyes whenever she steps on her high horse and judges people. She only ever seems to respect other women characters who pretty much are just as stubborn as her. Funny enough most other women characters I enjoy.

There’s only one other woman character I don’t like and anyone who read all the books can probably guess who, because the other woman character enables Eve’s hypocrisy as well and vice versa. But when that other character is in the books I tend to like Eve a lot more. Which is hilarious.
