The D-Day Landings of June 6th 1944 took place on five beaches in Normandy code-named Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. The Americans landed on Utah and Omaha. The British, Canadian, Polish and Free French landed on Gold, Juno and Sword.
This is a summary account of the largest seaborne invasion of World War Two and explains the key points in the build-up: Overlord plan, Fortitude deception, Bombing campaign, Operation Neptune, the Airborne assault, the allied landings on the beaches, the bridgehead and build up leading to the eventual breakout and allied victory after two months of heavy fighting in the bocage or hedgerows of Normandy.
