    Description

From the New York Times best-selling author of The Drowning Kind comes a genre-defying new novel, inspired by Mary Shelley’s masterpiece Frankenstein, that brilliantly explores the eerie mysteries of childhood and the evils perpetrated by the monsters among us.

The year 1978: At her renowned treatment center in picturesque Vermont, the brilliant psychiatrist Dr. Helen Hildreth is acclaimed for her compassionate work with the mentally ill. But when’s she home with her cherished grandchildren, Vi and Eric, she’s just Gran—teaching them how to take care of their pets, preparing them home-cooked meals, providing them with care and attention and love.

Then one day Gran brings home a child to stay with the family. Iris—silent, hollow-eyed, skittish, and feral—does not behave like a normal girl.

Still, Violet is thrilled to have a new playmate. She and Eric invite Iris to join their Monster Club, where they catalogue all kinds of monsters and dream up ways to defeat them. Before long, Iris begins to come out of her shell. She and Vi and Eric do everything together: ride their bicycles, go to the drive-in, meet at their clubhouse in secret to hunt monsters. Because, as Vi explains, monsters are everywhere.

The year 2019: Lizzy Shelley, the host of the popular podcast Monsters Among Us, is traveling to Vermont, where a young girl has been abducted, and a monster sighting has the town in an uproar. She’s determined to hunt it down, because Lizzy knows better than anyone that monsters are real—and one of them is her very own sister.

A haunting, vividly suspenseful thriller from the “literary descendant of Shirley Jackson” (Chris Bohjalian, author of The Flight Attendant), The Children on the Hill takes us on a breathless journey to face the primal fears that lurk within us all.

    For young readers?

I don’t know if was the narration of children’s voices throughout or the story alone, but either way I didn’t care for this book. It was not only a stretch of an attempt at a ghost story, but it was predictable and slow. I think I would have enjoyed this book when I was about 12 years old.

    fantastic twisty plot! BUY IT!

some plot twists you see from a mile away, but I guarantee you, even a seasoned reader will adore the ending of this book. voice acting is super well done, Erin Moon is sensational, she even makes a whiny younger brother character v. convincing! bravo, Ms. McMahon! More please?

A thriller to keep you guessing what’s next

Such a great story with an ending I didn’t expect!! The story begins with Violet and her brother. They live with their psychiatrist grandmother who runs a psychiatric hospital. Vi and her brother, Eric, have a monster club where they hunt werewolves and vampires. Gran brings another girl into their home. The story continues as they try to find out where the new girl came from. The story flips back and forth between Lizzie in 2019, The Hands of God, a book about the psychiatric hospital, 1980 and Vi 1978.

@JenniferMcMahon did an amazing job as always. I listened to this as an audiobook and Erin Moon was wonderful and kept me immersed in the story.

    Narrator was a little whiny

The story was really good and I really liked this book but the narrator got really whiny when reading some characters parts and by the end of the book I was wanting to fast forward through it

    Narration hurt the story

I have read a 3 of Jennifer McMahon's novels and enjoyed all.
I thought the story moved slowly in the beginning and almost chose not to listen.
The narration did not make this story interesting. I wondered if I had been able to read it in its print format I would have found it much more appealing.
However, I'm glad I continued because the ending had a great twist.

    LOVE IT

This book was recommended by a friend, and it did not disappoint. I loved how it kept me guessing throughout the story and the ending was not what I expected. The narrator did an amazing job.

    Still good…..

I love her books and have read them all, I’ve noticed however that the last two have lacked something that she used to have.

    McMahon never disappoints

This book is excellent!! McMahon never disappoints.

I don't want to give anything away but the twists and turns to get the end are well worth your time!

Erin Moon's narration was so well done every single person had their own voice and emotion, really great narration!
