Dès les premières minutes d'écoute, j'ai été happée par l'histoire. Un dilemme moral, d'abord : quelle décision prendre face à un adolescent qui, pour des raisons religieuses, refuse la transfusion qui lui éviterait une mort certaine et douloureuse? Où se situe la liberté du choix? De l'autre côté, Ian McEwan nous présente la vie privée de Fiona, dont le couple est en train d'exploser. Les deux histoires, racontées alternativement jusqu'à ce qu'elles se rejoignent, sont toutes les deux empruntes d'une très grande sensibilité. L'auteur aurait facilement pu tomber dans les écueils des deux thèmes (la liberté des soins médicaux et l'adultère). Il n'en est rien, pourtant. Le manichéisme facile est brillamment évité, le ton est juste, la langue est belle.
