Description

Viggo Hansen was a man nobody ever noticed, even though he lived in the midst of a close-knit community. His death doesn't hit the headlines, but there is something about the case that catches the attention of William Wisting's journalist daughter, Line, and she decides to write a newspaper article with a different twist for the festive season: the portrait of a completely anonymous and obscure person whose death goes unremarked and unmourned.

"Horst’s beautifully paced and compelling narrative ensnares the reader as it unveils the darkest side of human nature." (Caro Ramsey)
" The Caveman is not just an intriguing, fast-paced thriller, but a thoughtful meditation on loneliness, and a moving testament to the value of each and every human life." (Nicola Upson)

Surprise Christmas Gift

I have been a fan of this author since his first novel featuring Inspector Vistig, but this latest one is definitely my favorite. The summary sounded wholesome, warm festive tale so I took a chance. So very glad I did! Completely unexpected story of 2 dead men turned into a totally spellbinding drama of international killer hiding, and continuing to kill in Norway and Sweden after leaving the US. The manhunt began with American FBI assisting local police. I believe this is first Scandinavian novel to create an international crime hunt. Fantastic novel, would recommend it unreservedly to all readers who appreciate the writing of Henning Mankell, Thomas Reiner, Michael Connelly. When is Horst's next novel due?

Another Great Mystery

I have to admit that I do not get very much done when I start listening to another Wisting series mystery. This one was not exception to that rule. The Caveman has more twist and turns than a plate of curly fries and no sooner do you think you know who did it, you find out you were wrong. Saul Reichlin's narration is exceptional. My only problem with the series is that I only have one more remaining. Hopefully, there will be a audio version of the author's new book "The Katharina Code" in a series called "The Cold Case Quartet" due out in the UK in December

Interesting Listen with a Lot to Ponder

With every book, I learn to appreciate William Wisting a little bit more . . . thoughtful, methodical and not your usual police investigator . . . and the scenery and unique customs of the Norwegian people intrigue me . . . Wisting's split with his girlfriend, while leaving him lonely, was the right decision . . . as he still mourns the loss of his wife of many years . . . his relationship with his grown daughter, Line, is one of mutual respect and love . . . she's a journalist for a top newspaper and has opted to write a different kind of article than her usual . . . one about her reclusive neighbor, who sat dead in his chair watching television for months before being discovered . . . her detective father has an inkling that there's more to the death, but the case has been closed, and with other cases, looming large, he has moved on . . . the murder mystery parts of this series are top notch, but they are definitely tied up in a bow by the relationships, local flavor and the excellent perspective of this very gifted author . . . BRAVO!

Interesting--And Some Predictability

If you could sum up The Caveman in three words, what would they be?

It was predictable that Lina would end up caught in the web of the active murder investigation. If you've listened/read other in the series, this seems to be a pattern. I don't like patterns from one book to the other...isn't that what interesting writing is? No pattern and no predictability? In any case--it was a good listen. I like the characters--and the story.
I am hoping, however, that Horst becomes less predictable int he future.

Ich will hier garnicht zuviel verraten.
