One of the best ones
It is good to read this book knowing little or nothing about it. Just know that it is good and it will take you on a journey.
And let it take you.
It is character-centric, so maybe don't set your expectations on game-of-thrones-like journey.
But for me this is a good thing.
You will learn about characters through conversations and their actions and not by explicit character thought dump. This is great - I felt like I was learning about them as they were learning about themselves. Sometimes, while seeing more, maybe I understood more. About them and perhaps also about myself and the world.
I highly recommended this one.

Disappointed
Ishiguro's creativity is fully alive here - but his imagined Dark Ages seem a bland place in this slow-paced, dreary tale.

A beautifully read allegory
Who was your favorite character and why?
The old couple Axl and Beatrice, because of their loving and respectful relationship.
Which scene was your favorite?
The scene by the lake when they speak to the old lady.
Any additional comments?
I really enjoyed the narrator's voice and the soothing and not too performative way of telling this story.

Exceptional
This book was dreamy and magical, with a light, deliberate pace. I don't think I understood all of the story's elements and themes, but I enjoyed it very much. It's really a love story.

Perfect performance wonderful story
Absolutely wonderful performance and enchanting, unusual and thought provoking story. I was very impressed by the reader. Will be thinking about the ins and outs of the novel and its themes for awhile!

Was hab ich nicht verstanden?
Ein wunderschönes altes Englisch!
ABER: Die Geschichte ist eher uninteressant. Ein altes Ehepaar lebt in einer Gemeinschaft, in der sie sich ausgegrenzt fühlen, Erinerungen an schönere Zeiten fallen ihnen schwer, als ob ein Nebel (mist) darüber liegt. Sie beschließen, zu ihrem Sohn zu wandern, der vor langer Zeit aus der Gemeinschaft weggegangen ist.
In einem Dorf , dass sie auf ihrer Wanderungen durchqueren, treffen sie auf einen Krieger und einen Jungen. Der Junge ist verwundet, der Krieger soll das Ungeheuer besiegen, dass den Jungen verwundet hat. Die Wunde des Jungen ist eine Bedrohung für die Bewohner.
Außerdem muss irgendwo ein weiblciher Drache sein, den es zu besiegen gilt und der verantwortlich ist für das Vergessen, dass alle befällt.
Undsoweiter.
Es gibt noch enen alten Krieger, der sich herausstellt als der Beschützer des weiblichen Drachen. Am Ende ist er tot. Sehr ehrenhaft.
Nein. Das habe ich nicht erwartet. Eine historische Fantasy Geschichte, in der ich definitiv das vermisse, was ich von Kazuo Ishiguro kenne. Ncihts hat mich betroffen, nichts hat mich berührt, es gab keinen Moment, in dem ich verblüfft, verwundert war wie in seinen vorherigen Geschichten.
Schade.
Ich schliesse nciht aus, dass ich irgendetwas nicht mitbekommen habe Etwas Wesentliches.
Ich würde das Buch meinen Freundinnen nicht empfehlen.

expected more ...
this book is a curious fairy tale. yet, it leaves more questions open than it answers ... the language is impressive as always with the author. the speaker the best i ever listened to, able to mimic perfectly the many different characters in the plot. having read the authors "what remains of the day" I am still somewhat disappointed with this novel, which to me appears to be much less relevant ...

I expected more from this
The whole story is one giant metaphor, which I wont spoil. This is fine and could have been great, but the characters feel somewhat life-less. They are not really interesting even though the set-up and some of the story lines could have been really interesting. It is a dry read/listen and I felt quite detached from it all. Perhaps this is intended but I did not enjoy it very much.
Anyway it could be a great conversation starter for a book club because if its metaphorical nature and its provocative central theme.

Mystisch schön!
Das Englisch ist gut zu verstehen, dem Sprecher kann man gut zuhören. Das ist das erste Mal, dass ich Ishiguro höre / lese und ich bin begeistert. Es ist eine ruhige mystische Geschichte.
