Description
The Boy They Tried to Hide is the startling true account of how truth is sometimes stranger than fiction....
Shane Dunphy was working as a resource teacher in a rural town when he was approached by the mother of one of his pupils, seeking help. She is worried for her troubled young son, who has been found leaving the house late at night to go deep into the woods near their home. He has spoken of meetings with a friend, Thomas, but no one else has seen him or knows who he is.
As Shane tries to discover what's going on, a sexual predator he helped bring to justice years before reappears. The man is looking to settle a score and has picked someone close to Shane as his next victim.
In The Boy They Tried to Hide, Shane Dunphy revisits cases he encountered during his time as a child protection worker and journalist and, in doing so, once again discovers that leaving the past behind is harder than it seems.

Gripping
Heard a little bit of this story on Spooked podcast, intrigued both by the author and his soothing voice I downloaded it. So glad I did. Listened every spare moment. Will be downloading another Dunphy book for sure.

Listen to the “Spooked” podcast story instead
Like most others, I came to this story from the telling on the WNYC podcast “Spooked”. The story seemed compelling enough on the show: A lonely young boy continually receives the nightly company of an old folk tale thought to be dead for over twenty years.
The podcast left me wanting to know more, so, I bought the book thinking that I would gain some more insight to the spectral story. Sadly, the paranormal story of a young boy in a dark wood is only 10% (IF THAT) of this book. The rest covers the lackluster accounts of a vengeful sexual deviant, and a misfit young man who dies while imprisoned. At least in the podcast telling of the story, the author made mention that the boy could be getting lured into some sexual predators clutches with the help of another young child. That, at least, would have been a more interesting telling than the one laid out in this book.
This book seems to have the intention of wanting to appear as a memoir/fiction tale, when really, they would be better left as journal entries in the authors cabinet.
Aside from the misleading title, the audiobook is FILLED TO THE BRIM with glaring editing mistakes, poor audio quality, amateurish writing, and a mediocre reading by the author himself. I know some may like it when an author reads there own work, trust me, this is not one of them.
Save you money or your tokens, and listen to the podcast “A Friend In The Forest” by SPOOKED.

Misleading title but good story
I initially heard part of this story on the podcast Spooked. I was very intrigued about the supernatural aspects of the ghost boy. However, when I started listening to the book I discovered that this was a pretty small part of the book. The book has three different stories going on. 1. Ghost boy in forest 2. Investigation into a death in a prison 3. Interactions with a psychopath. I felt that the ghost boy was only 20% of the story. Overall the story was pretty interesting but I feel that the main point of the book was exposing a flawed legal system.

Entertaining Read
Heard about this story on the Spooked podcast, so decided to take a listen. Author’s voice and delivery sounds like a fireside story time, which was very entertaining. There were some audio and editing edits (I.e static on occasion, a few pauses, etc) but nothing that detracted from the story in the least. Would recommend to friends!

GREAT STORY
Enjoyed the details and Irish accent of the author/narrator. Audio has a few hiccups but nothing you can not understand. I have listed to it numerous times that’s how much I enjoy it.

A few editing issues, but not enough to detract from the story. I have recommended to others.

A lot going on.
This book consists of 3 tales apparently happening simultaneously took the narrator/ author. Each could have made for its own book or short story. Was a little too much for me but I know life doesn't happen in plot form. Excellent listen though. I like it when the author narrates their books like they are sitting by the fire telling you a story. This was pretty close to that.

Author 5 stars, Audible 3
Fascinating story, very well narrated by the author. Entertaining from beginning to end. The sound quality left a lot to be desired, as the story skipped in many places, played static and interference.

Good story, poor editing
The story is very entertaining; it is the combination of some ghost story, an investigation, and a stalker drama. While the book is great, where the audio book breaks down is the editing. Shane does a good job narrating but the book was riddled with static and jumping words throughout. At the end of the book you can hear Shane back up and retry a phrase a few times and once there is a minute where he gets his papers in order and composes himself before going on. The book is well worth the money, it could just use another round of audio editing.
