City Watch Investigator Rowan Mirewood knows exactly what contracts cost. He is still paying for his own.
So when thirteen children vanish from the coastal city of Thesselmar, each home left undisturbed except for a receipt written in the language of founding contracts, Rowan and his partner Joren are sent to investigate.
There are no signs of struggle, no witnesses—only whispers of a man known as the Benefactor, who once granted favors freely in the harbor district. Now, decades later, those favors are being collected.
As Rowan digs deeper, he uncovers a thirty-year-old injustice: a man who gave everything, received nothing, and learned the contract system well enough to break it. Are the children victims? Or are they leverage against five powerful merchant houses that refused to pay what they owed.
Caught between desperate families, a broken system, and a man demanding justice on his own terms, Rowan faces an impossible choice. Because finding the Benefactor isn't the challenge: it's Rowan's choice of how much of himself he will have to give to bring them home.
