Liz Mercer knows how to read the Lake Michigan shoreline. She’s spent years learning what others miss. Stones. Patterns. Absences.
When seasoned rockhunters begin turning up dead, each marked with a black opal, Liz is drawn into an investigation governed by a chilling set of rules. The killer is methodical. The doctrine is precise. And when arrests are made, the violence should end.
It doesn’t.
Messages continue to arrive. Observations. Warnings. Corrections that never tell Liz what to do, only when to wait. Each delay feels justified. Each pause feels responsible. And each moment of hesitation leaves room for something worse.
As another figure emerges, exploiting access rather than force, Liz begins to realize the true danger isn’t who commits the act, but who shapes the silence around it.
The Author is a dark psychological thriller about moral hesitation, inherited systems, and the terrifying moment when observation becomes participation.
