Description

Thirty years have passed since Greta Marchmont left the Marchmont Hall. Now she finally returns, with amnesia and no memory of her past.

But a walk through the wintry landscape leads to a disturbing discovery: she comes across a grave in the forest, and the weathered inscription on the cross tells her that her own son is buried here. Greta begins to search for the woman she once was, and to do so she must summon all of her courage....

Great but..

I really love L.R.s writing and this is once again a captivating story that kept me awake several nights. I just find it a bit too superficial when it comes to all the money issues. Where does all the Marchmont money come from? everyone knows that all big mansions and farms nowadays are very expensive to run. When Ceska spends 'a lot' on hotel suites and at Harrod's she takes the money from the Marchmont account and in the end after the fire the book says that the insurance money is not important ... I reckon money is not at all the issue in the book but it kind of makes it a little bit shallow .

Surprisingly Good!

Hesitated in purchasing this book because there were so few reviews, but so glad I took the chance. Although the story was not real suspenseful, it was both in depth and had great character development. Also, narration was incredible! J.B. did an excellent job of bringing the characters to life. I actually grew to care for them, and wanted to find out what happened to each of them. Story was definitely long, but the time still passed quickly. Try it out, and do not think you will be disappointed with the purchase.

Great book! Terrific performance!

This was my favorite of her books so far! Truly three dimensional in character development.

Engaging

Excellently drawn characters. The narration added tremendously to the story! I usually listen to audiobooks while I exercise and drive, but I could not wait to get to the end of this story. Thank you for the great entertainment!

Characters elicited no sympathy

What disappointed you about The Angel Tree?

The main character was so unsympathetic. She was a weak woman who couldn't see beyond her own warped view. I could not understand why the male character found her so attractive. She was insipid both as a young and old woman. I haven't slogged through the last five hours so perhaps she will redeem herself. The supporting characters were engaging.

What could Lucinda Riley have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

She should have done some research. At the time period, the studio system in Hollywood, as well as morality clauses we're thing of the past. I also don't believe a schizophrenic can go fifteen years without a psychotic episode.

What three words best describe Julia Barrie’s performance?

Not too bad. Overall was OK but American male characters were not very good.

What character would you cut from The Angel Tree?

I hate to say it but the main one, Greta.

Any additional comments?

I have enjoyed several books by this author so I was surprised that this one was so slapdash.

Loved this story and character development. I never tired of listening to narrator's lovely voice. I would recommend this story if you enjoy family sagas over the generations.

A very long soap opera

I had high hopes for this novel, but it was little more than a sappy soap opera.

Starke Frauen?

A child star, a disturbed mind

I've read some of Lucinda Riley's novels before, but so far, I liked this one best. What a gripping tale about, among other things, a very disturbed mind. I really felt with the protagonists, and went through all the emotions from love, through sorrow, to horror. The characters all felt true, and the book had me hooked until the end. It was an outstanding performance by Julia Barrie. I'm convinced that the narrator enhanced my experience of the book. My guess is, that Mrs Riley did a lot of research into the symptoms of depression, schizophrenia etc, because from my experience, what is described here is very convincing.
So, author and narrator both did an excellent job, and I'm glad I happend to choose this book when on the lookout for something new. If you want a glimpse into the time just after WWII until the 1990s, with all the problems women had to contend with, and the consequences of pregnancy as an unmarried woman, this is the book for you. We're fortunate that in our time and place it has improved, but the problems of how to raise a child as a single mum are still pretty much the same. This is a powerful story of a couple of women who faced exactly this, and how they got through it.
