Carlyle is a heavenly being who works as an agreement facilitator in the time outside of time. Here human beings are allowed to read the scrolls of their lives prior to their births. His first clients Julia and Nellie Jolicoeur – twins destined to be born on the cusp of the millennium in New York City - readily agree to their scrolls. When Carlyle is given the opportunity to read them, he is shocked. Who would agree to such things? And why would the Designer require it of them?
In answer to his questions Carlyle is sent down to earth to observe the twins live out their scrolls. This will take him into the workings of imperfect families, through the trauma of 9/11, across the United States and into the depths of human trafficking.
