Man, I love these books!

Years ago, I loved reading these books for the first time. Then, I loved rereading them. When I discovered them as audiobooks, I was excited to hear how they would translate. Bernard Setaro Clark (I think that's right...) was a great choice. Dry and has a variety of voices and accents in his arsenal. And the story is still just as fun and engaging as I remember. I strongly recommend this series. It is super fun. My only complaint is how quickly I chew through them.

Yay! WAY better than book 3 was...

WHEW! After the disappointment in book three, I was hesitant to read this one, but since I had already bought it, and was looking for something different to read, I picked it up. Turns out I didn't need to worry. It is somewhere between very good like book one and pretty good like book 2. It is nothing like the waste of time book 3 was.

No big surprises... the main character has a 'problem' to solve, he teams up with another character and they go solve it. Little bit of fighting, little bit of suspense, little bit of world development, quite a bit of character development...

All in all? Well, I will read the next book in the series.

Another great book!

Steven does a fantastic job of spreading out hints and clues about all of his characters that are spread out in his books. So you get the ahh effect when you put everything together.

I love this book and all of Steven Brust's work, and I'll always come back to them when nothing else seems interesting.

Friendship against their will

Nobody really likes anybody else. They're all too stiff-necked. But many of them manage to get along some how anyway. And the narrator finds the perfect voice for our protagonist.

Risky storytelling device pays off

As the book progressed, I became more impressed with how the author had structured and chosen to present his story. Initially it seems like he's jumping around between 3 stories about different points in the main character's life, which fits as this series isn't told in chronological order anyway. It's a structuring method that's hard to pull off well, but I think it's well applied here because anyone who's read the first three books in this series already knows the ultimate outcome of this book. The journey is really the entire point of this story.
