A routine emergency broadcast test was supposed to last a few seconds.

Across the city, people pause—mid-step, mid-sentence, mid-breath—and for a moment, everything goes still.

Paramedic Mara feels it before she understands it. A pressure behind the eyes. A silence that isn't empty. A shift in the way people move—subtle, almost unnoticeable… until it isn't.

They're biting.
But the violence isn't chaotic. It's controlled. Deliberate. As if something deep inside the human brain has been rewritten.
