बहर्जी नाईकांनी सुरतेची माहिती तपशीलवार मिळवून आणली होती. तेथे खंडणी मिळणार हे दिसताच महाराजांनी सुरेतेची मोहिम आखली. सुरतेचा मुघल सुभेदार इनायतखान हा सुभेदार होता. महाराजांनी आपला वकील पाठवून खानाकडे खंडणीची मागणी केली. पण खानाला ही सारी चेष्टाच वाटत होती त्यानी उलटा निरोप पाठवला, आमच्याकडून तुम्हाला दंड हवाय? बोला कोणता दंड करू? निरोप ऐकताच महाराज संतापले आणि ते लगेच सुरतेवर चालून गेले. खान लढलाच नाही. तो किल्ल्यात लपून बसला. महाराजांनी आपला मुक्काम सुरतेबाहेर ठोकला. मराठी फौजा शहरात घुसल्या आणि धनवंतांकडून खंडणी वसूल करू लागला. जडजवाहीर, चांदी,सोने, व रोकड जमा केली जात होती. श्रीमंतांचे वाडे फुटत होते पण गरीब, स्त्रिया, मुले, वृध्द, मंदिरे, चर्च, दर्गे यांना धक्काही लावला जात नव्हता.©2021 Storyside IN (P)2021 Storyside IN Europe
