O. S. Card did not do his research about feminism
I think everything can be summed up in this simple quote from the book:
"I wish your mother hadn't given you that special message about feminism. It's made you prickly about nothing, Carlotta."
The only times the author references feminism, and he does it multiple time directly or indirectly, he degrades it. He chose to associate "feminism" with anger, aggressiveness and lack of patience. I understand why some people don't know what feminism is, what it has achieved and why it is still needed. It is often due to a lack of research and being influenced by some medias/school/etc... However I expect more understanding from an author writing books for children and teenagers. Putting these kind of words in the mouth of a character which is supposed to be good, empathic and extremely intelligent will just reinforce children's misunderstanding. At the very least, I would expect two or three sentences after the previous quote. Something like: "Being a feminist is good, it means to fight for your right to vote, to chose what should and shouldn't be done to you and your body, and to be equal to men in every way."
Don't misunderstand me please. Reading this book is interesting. But If my children read it one day I will have to give some context regarding Orson Scott Card homophobic and sexist views (go read his biography). It's a good way to learn others' point of view and see when an author tries to influence you.
