Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves her life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha… and the secrets of her heart.

Shadow and Bone initially presents itself as familiar YA fantasy: an orphaned heroine, a revealed destiny and a world divided by magic and power. What elevates it beyond its tropes is its thematic focus on identity and power: Alina’s journey isn’t an instant empowerment fantasy, but an uneasy transformation where being “special” comes with isolation, pressur and loss of self. Bardugo uses magic less as spectacle and more as a lens to explore who gets visibility, who gets used and what it costs to finally matter.

The Darkling remains one of the novel’s most compelling elements (I said what I said... team Darkling here >.> He is the definition of "Villains are made, not born".), not only as a potential romantic figure (let me swoon in peace.), but mostly as an ideological one. He embodies the dangerous appeal of control disguised as protection, forcing us to question whether noble intentions can excuse cruelty. While the main romance leans conventional and didn't resonate much with me, the atmospheric worldbuilding and defined magic system are far richer on the page than in the tv show adaptation. Imperfect but 100% immersive, Shadow and Bone succeeds as a strong foundation for the Grishaverse. A story that invites you to stay..
