Description

Legends tell of the evil god Torak coveting the power of the Orb of Aldur, until he was defeated in a final battle. Prophecy also speaks of a time when he will again awaken to seek dominance over all the world. Now the Orb has been stolen by a priest of Torak, and that time is at hand. Belgarath the Sorcerer and his daughter, Polgara the arch-Sorceress, are on the trail of the Orb, seeking to regain it before the final disaster.

With them goes Garion, a simple farm boy only months before, but now the focus of the struggle. He had never believed in sorcery, wanting no part of it. Yet with every league they travel, the power is growing within him, forcing him into acts of wizardry that he can't accept. His fate is inextricably woven into the fabric of an unfolding prophecy for glory or doom.

Wonderful story line, not so great narration.

Would you be willing to try another one of Cameron Beierle’s performances?

I'll be perfectly honest, I would only buy the next book in line because I LOVE the story line so much. I grew up reading these books and have a great fondness for the characters. Cameron Beierle's narration leaves a lot to be desired. The accents he gives the characters are very thick and change frequently. I think he tried to make things too complicated and lost track of who was who. Belgarath sounds like some buffoon. I do have a hard time listening to the narration at first and have to concentrate on the story line in order to get past the "voice."

I do wonder if Cameron was given any direction from the author. I know when we read, unfamiliar names are said how we'd imagine them to be. Almost all the names and places are pronounced differently than I have said them. Who knows which is correct, but that is another issue that grates on my nerves.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I could not listen to the narrator for that long.

Any additional comments?

Fantastic story line, the characters are well formed and believable.... the narrator however, over did it.

Love the Story Not the Reader

This is a wonderful fantasy series and I hope they get the first book Pawn of Prophecy eventually. However unlike the other reviewer, I thought the reader was rather mediocre. The accents were inconsistant and frankly I didnt find them well done. They are mixture of Arnold Schwartzenhager..( and Boris Badenov with fake Scotts and French thrown in. They annoyed me throughout the entire story and usually I am not all that concerned about narration. On the good side Cameron Beierle's narration is clear. He would have done better however to just give the book a straight read.

The characters come to life

This second installment in the Belgariad is just as enjoyable as the first. Cameron's reading is excellent and he manages to bring the characters to life. A lovely fantasy adventure, that incorporates the best of family values. The story of a boy on his way to manhood, and the people who guide him along the way. A good listen for juveniles as well

good plot and dialogue, irritating narrator

I've enjoyed the book and series on the whole but was quite annoyed with the narration. Aside from minor items (always saying "secession" when in context the word must have clearly been "succession", for example), the narrator had very little consistency in intonation or even in pronouncing characters' names. While I realize that there are rather a lot of people introduced over the course of the series, and many countries, a single character sometimes sounds Russian, Swedish, Irish, or American. Given the structure of the series, it would make sense for each country to have a designated accent and stick with that. But at a minimum, I would like consistent accent and intonation for individuals we spend a lot of time with!

Terrible narration

The narrator's male character voices usually sound pretentious and flamboyant. Garion's Voice they randomly picks up a English or Australian accent. Overall this narrator gets very very annoying the more you listen to him.

I'll read the rest of the series.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

No, not really. I'm not too fond of the narrator. I'd recommend the story though.

What did you like best about this story?

The story is fun, classic fantasy. Reminds me a bit of knightly romances, with magic thrown in.

What three words best describe Cameron Beierle’s performance?

He tried.

Any additional comments?

Just as book one, this book is open-ended. You probably have to read the entire series to get to the solution of the adventure.

Beste Unterhaltung!
