    Description

Gifted power over life and death, Lysandros has spent millennia in the underworld, listless and alone. The youngest child of Hades and Persephone, he’s been sheltered from the threats in the world above.

Theo Ward hasn’t been so lucky. After watching his mother wither away, he’d do almost anything to have her back. When a messenger appears at the Banneker College of Magic and offers the young professor a chance to save her, Theo can’t pass it up, even if it means going straight into the underworld and dragging her home. But Theo gets more than he bargained for when he crosses paths with the prince of Hades.

Set against the king of Olympus, they must shed their past burdens and learn to trust each other, so they can face down a storm that threatens to wipe the nation’s capital off the map.

Wonderful Writing Marred by Uneven Narration

I am a huge fan of Sam Burns novels! Her stories are full of creative and believable world-building, compelling characters and consistently interesting plot lines with the kind of romances we all wish we had. This one was no exception: a fun reinterpretation of the Greek gods and myths.

The narrator, however, was difficult to hear—and even to comprehend sometimes. It's a shame because the timbre of Mr. Zaba's voice is really good. If he worked on emphasis, cadence and NOT swallowing his words, he would be a real star on Audible. Unfortunately, the narration required continual rewinding to understand what he said. A narrator like Chris Chambers, who has a similar voice quality, would have made this a full 5+ star listen.

    Loved the story

Enjoyed this one from Sam Burns and WM Fawkes! The world building was great and I loved the storyline. The narration had some issues including some odd background noises and the narrator was rather stilted and did not have definitive voice distinctions.

    Not for me

There is this saying; ”If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all”. I’m really struggling to find anything half-way decent to say about this book, but sadly I’m failing miserably. I am going to try my best at not be too negative, because while this book did not work for me, it can most certainly be a book you’ll love. Reviews are a mixed bag, so never take my word for gospel, but make up your own mind.

Before even the first word was spoken I knew this book wasn’t going to leave me in awe. Because the first thing you heard of this recording was a whooshing background sound, and it was present throughout the book. It was most noticeable in pauses and when the volume was turned on high, but it was distracting and lessen the experience of any listen. On the plus side, this sound was constant, it never changed or varied, so after a while it could be ignored.

This review will focus mainly on the narration, because I honestly can’t say that much about the plot. Other than after finishing it, I’m kind of still wondering what it was all about, what the point of it all was. Sure, events took place and people did stuff, parties were held and a few gods quarrelled. Still, it lacked depth and meaning, it lacked feeling.

If you’ve hung around for a while you might know that I love finding new narrators and Zachary Zaba is definitely new to me. Sadly his narration wasn’t for me. Or the genre wasn’t for him. I mean he has a good voice for audio, but when I pick up an audiobook (fiction) I want to be entertained. I want to be swept away to a land far away. Zaba don’t do that for me with his monotone reading of the words. It lacked all kind of feeling and connection to the plot and characters. Everything was read with the same voice and in the same tone and at times it was also very choppy where the flow of the words didn’t feel quite natural. I did look Zaba up, and found he’s narrated a bunch of books in a variety of genres, many of them non-fiction. I do think that non-fiction is a genre he’d excel in, because like I said in the beginning, he has the voice for it.

This book was sadly a bust on several levels for me, and sadly I’m jumping off this train at the first station. But, if you are a fan of mythology you might want to give this book a try, it could be a hit for you.

A copy of this book was generously provided by the authors in exchange for an honest review for Love Bytes.

A Good Story, Not So Good Narration

This is the first book in The Lords of the Underworld Series. An interesting story with good writing. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters great. The characters were interesting, developed and thought out. Lysandros and Thieo are the MC’s of this book. I can recommend the book as a good read. The narration however could’ve been a lot better. I am picky about narration, but the speed and flow weren’t that good. The recording had some technical issues that shouldn’t have been there. And overall for a professional narration it should been better quality work. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

    horrible narration

I normally can excuse just about anything if I truly enjoy a book, but the audio quality and lack luster narration just killed some of my joy. I usually easy to please cause I have varied taste however Mr Zaba's flat performance made a cute fluff filled paranormal read sad. This book could really used a strong performer to really boost it never the less I did enjoy the story.

    4.5 stars

I have always been a huge fan of Greek mythology, so this story particularly interested me. It was a lot of fun meeting all the characters from myths, and I think Burns and Fawkes did a wonderful job of keeping them true (enough) to their stories, while adding unique spins. The mystery surrounding the senators daughter and the freak storms was interesting enough, but what made this story so good to me was Lysandros and Theo. They were adorable together, and I loved seeing them figure themselves out while falling in love. I will definitely be continuing with this series.
Zachary Zaba did a wonderful job narrating this story, but there was some sort of wind tunnel sounding feedback for a large majority of it that took away from the performance.

    Unprepared

Enjoyed the book, however, I was not prepared for the risque parts. Also is it me or is the reader hard to understand and talking to fast? Overall I enjoyed the book 3.5/5

Fantastic story, except for the vacuum

The story is great, and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Zachary Zaba, but it sounded like someone was vacuuming in the background the entire time. The vvroom would get louder like a vacuum was getting closer then softer like it was going farther away. It wasn't super loud, but it was enough to be distracting sometimes though mostly I was able to ignore it. You can't hear it when listening to the teaser. They chose the only clip in the entire book without the wired noise to set as the teaser. Anyway, it was still a great book and I would still recommend buying it but if you're easily distracted or irritated it might be hard to get through.

    Okay

The story was just that, okay. It wasn’t interesting enough to keep my attention, so much that I stopped listing half way through, chose a different book to listen to, then came back to this one after I was done. It does get a bit exciting toward the end, but it’s such a small part of the story that I wonder if it was worth it. The narrator had the potential of saving this story like some do with a really great narration but there was a sound, like there was a vacuum cleaner running in the background the entire time that made it hard to concentrate on listening to the story. A story shouldn’t take this much effort to listen to. I don’t think I’ll continue on with this series and probably not this narrator either.

    Great Story

I received an ARC of this audio for my honest review. This is a change of pace from the stories I normally read. I thought the plot was intriguing as it kept my attention. I really recommend this book these authors are great.
