Precursor by Vasyl Shevchuk tells the story of Hryhoriy Skovoroda, Ukraine’s “wandering philosopher” of the 18th century. A defender of justice and freedom, Skovoroda lived an unsettled life, challenging social and religious hypocrisy in his search for truth.
In Precursor, Vasyl Shevchuk offers a compelling portrait of Hryhoriy Skovoroda, one of Ukraine’s most celebrated thinkers and a unique figure of the 18th century. Known for his philosophical parables and folk songs, Skovoroda’s defiance of societal and religious norms led him to live as a “wandering” philosopher, advocating for the rights of the common folk.
Shevchuk’s novel immerses listeners in the Russian Empire's oppressive atmosphere, following Skovoroda’s travels and ideological battles against corruption and hypocrisy. This novel not only brings Skovoroda’s legacy to life but also highlights his lasting influence on Ukrainian and Slavic thought.
A powerful listen for anyone interested in philosophy and history.
