    Description

Picking up where her modern classic The Bean Trees left off, Barbara Kingsolver's best-selling Pigs in Heaven continues the tale of Turtle and Taylor Greer, a Native American girl and her adoptive mother who have settled in Tucson, Arizona, as they both try to overcome their difficult pasts.

Taking place three years after The Bean Trees, Taylor is now dating a musician named Jax and has officially adopted Turtle. But when a lawyer for the Cherokee Nation begins to investigate the adoption, their new life together begins to crumble.

Depicting the clash between fierce family love and tribal law, poverty and means, abandonment and belonging, Pigs in Heaven is a morally wrenching, gently humorous work of fiction that speaks equally to the head and to the heart.

    Wonderful Metaphors of Life

I laughed aloud walking down the street. I was sorry when it ended. I'm ready for the next book.

A story I wish would never end

I am a huge fan of Barbara Kingsolver's work. As a social worker and a biologist, I find that her descriptions of the natural world inspire a mindful peace and her treatment of individual characters and the broader human condition both challenging and insightful.
I rarely write reviews. After finishing this two part series, I find myself feeling connected to these characters and sincerely wishing to know more about their story. Some of the broader themes explored in the series include immigration, racism and white privilege, Native Americans, Foster care and adoption--topics with which we continue to struggle.
This book is interesting and emotional. I will listen to it again and again.

    What happen...

I loved Prodigal Summer ... it was a beautiful book beautifully narrated. I am having trouble listening to Pigs in Heaven because of the narrator. The narration is flat and uninteresting.

This book (and others by Kingsolver) made me love Arizona... She writes the most amazing novels that really wrap you up in their worlds.

Sweet ending to Greer Family saga.

Another fine read by Kingsolver. While a little predictable, author gives us a great history lesson on the Cherokee, while entertaining with a new batch of characters.

    Literature with suspense

After reading about 15 crime novels, I wondered how I would adapt to the story of Taylor and her adopted child Turtle. No worries. There was plenty of suspense. The characters were well-drawn, believable, and likable. Barbara Kingsolver is a masterful author.

    Heavenly Empathy

This book confirms my impression that Barbara Kingsolver is a real treasure. Her empathy for ...how do I say this?...people of meager privilege in a stratified society is reliable, illuminating, and welcome as a hug in hard times. Picking up the story of Turtle and Taylor, the story picks up speed and fascinating characters as it goes along. I also really appreciated CJ Critt's rendition of those characters.

    Meandered. Wallowed. Ended.

Love BK, she’s amazing. Having said that I don’t feel her heart was in this sequel; it was as if someone who knew the author’s style well but not the characters wrote this book. Almost each and every character was a lukewarm version of themselves...even Turtle, but especially Taylor. Oh well. Kingsolver is a rare talent I have enjoyed immensely over the years; maybe it was rushed by the publisher?

    never disappointed

this author always has something to tell me. She covers a great deal of personal and social concerns here and offers one answer. Don't think thik this was her best but very enjoyable
