主役の看護婦（当時の名称）・モモ子役を桃井かおりが演じ、大きな話題となった。病気や障がいをもった乳幼児の看護に奮闘しながら、次第に子どもたちと心を通わせていくモモ子。ある日、手足を欠損して生まれ、両眼も失ったタロウの担当となる。個人的な感傷は、医療現場では封印すべきなのか――。
『医療少年院物語』は、著者が15年の歳月をかけて取材執筆した渾身の作。現場を訪れては「これは、とても書けない」と何度も挫折しそうになったという。不良仲間との万引きにはじまり、窃盗で捕まりノイローゼとなっていった少年や、テレクラで売春を重ね妊娠した少女など、看護婦と職員が苦悶しながら彼らとの交流をはかっていく。それは、何故彼らが非行に走ったのかという、問題の根源を知ることに繋がっていく。©2016 Haru Egawa (P)2026 小学館
