Description
Another exciting adventure from the number one New York Times best-selling series!
The darkest secrets are the hardest to bring to light....
Sylvestri Yarrow is on a streak of bad luck with no end in sight. She's been doing her best to keep the family cargo business going after her mom's death, but between mounting debt and increasing attacks by the Nihil on unsuspecting ships, Syl is in danger of losing all she has left of her mother. She heads to the galactic capital of Coruscant for help but gets sidetracked when she's drawn into a squabble between two of the Republic's most powerful families over a patch of space on the frontier. Tangled up in familial politics is the last place Syl wants to be, but the promise of a big payoff is enough to keep her interested....
Meanwhile, Jedi Knight Vernestra Rwoh has been summoned to Coruscant, but with no idea of why or by whom. She and her Padawan, Imri Cantaros, arrive at the capital along with Jedi Master Cohmac Vitus and his Padawan, Reath Silas - and are asked to assist with the property dispute on the frontier. But why? What is so important about an empty patch of space?
The answer will lead Vernestra to a new understanding of her abilities and take Syl back to the past...and to truths that will finally come out of the shadows.

Gripping Story
engaging story to develop characters of the high republic further but not as much production value as other entries.
didn't mind the narrator's voice but not as much range as other SW regulars

Severe drop in quality for Star Wars audiobooks
I haven't finished the book yet but wanted to warn others who are used to the usual quality that Star Wars audiobooks provide. This audiobook does not utilize sound effects, white noise or music. They play a bit of music at the very beginning but that's it just solid narration. The narrator is also kinda flat with her performance so don't expect any range in terms of character voices. Just a warning before you go into this audiobook that it's not like the usual Star Wars books.

Decent story, horrible audiobook…
First and foremost:
If you get hired to narrate a Star Wars book..Maybe listen to one before you record your performance. The narrator is clearly not familiar with Star Wars, or at least the other High Republic books/audiobooks. So many mispronunciations that would’ve been easily fixed with a little bit of familiarization.. or I don’t know, someone on the production team paying attention.
This production feels like a last minute school project that was quickly thrown together. It is the first audiobook that I have experienced in the past decade that does not make good use of music and/or sound effects to enhance the storytelling experience. To make matters worse, the narrator does no voice acting and gives very little in their voice inflection. What we end up with is a bare bones near and monotone audiobook that is a chore to listen to.
With all current audiobooks being enhanced and preformed in a way that elevates the story there is no excuse for this, especially for Star Wars book.

Horrible Performance...
I haven't finished the story yet, but the performance is so disappointing I may not. I have loved the other High Republic books released, but the narrator of this book is vastly different than the others. There are numerous mispronunciations of key reoccurring characters, no effort put into voices, no music or scenes changes, and the narrator has an extremely limited emotional range. Honestly, it sounds like I'm listening to the TikTok voice read this book. I'm extremely disappointed.

Couldn't finish it
Keylor is has no life and refuses to give different voices to different characters. I couldn't get through chapter 1 before switching to a different book read by Marc Thompson. It also had no music and no sfx. Get the book in physical form do not get the audible version.

Bad Narration
You can tell the narrator didn't listen to Light of the Jedi or Rising storm, or get the proper pronunciation for big names in the High Republic series. Such as the Nihil (Ny-hill) or Marshion Roh (not sure if that's how it's spelled but that's what it should sound like). I'm honestly probably going to finish the book after I've listened to the other few books I have a few more times.

The narration ruined this
The narrator mispronounces several major things early on and continues throughout. Not sure why they changed narrators, also the story is made harder to follow because she doesnt change her voice between characters, like at all.. I was excited for this book but half way through im just waiting for it to end. Huge drop in production quailty.

A Mixed Bag
I was excited for "Out of the Shadows" because "Into the Dark" is one of my favorite stories from the High Republic era and I was looking forward to revisiting some of the characters we first met there. But while Reath Silas and Cohmac Vitus are in this book and Reath is a point-of-view character for some of it, Vernestra Rwoh and Sylvestri Yarrow are the main characters here. I probably shouldn't have been surprised since Vern and her padawan Imri Cantaros were main characters in Justina Ireland's first High Republic book, "A Test of Courage." But still, it was disappointing to realize how little focus we were going to get on Reath and Cohmac and how little they would sound like themselves.
That's one of my main complaints about this book, most of the characters who have been introduced previously in other stories sound out of character and flat, with the exceptions of Vernestra, Imri, and Nan. Up until now the series has been remarkably consistent in the way characters were handled from book to book and author to author. Here the returning characters feel like they lack any depth or personality. The characterizations weren't helped by the narrator, who does a pretty lackluster job. She uses the same voice for most of the characters, which gets confusing in spots. When she does vary her delivery it's for the adults who she reads in a slow, stilted manner that makes the dialog feel unnatural and choppy, so much so that I'm not sure whether the dialog was badly written or just badly read. That's a shame because there are some interesting new characters here and important things happen that are likely to impact future High Republic stories in a major way. Vernestra and Imri are highlights and I even warmed to Sylvestri Yarrow by the end of the book.
There's a lot of teen angst and some fraught teen romance in this story, neither of which were my cup of tea even when I was a teenager, but if they're yours you may enjoy that part more than I did. All in all, I wish I liked this book more than I do, but to me it's the weakest book in the series so far.

Horrible Narrator
You’d think that someone would’ve pulled this narrator aside and taught her how to pronounce character names - not a single one does she pronounce consistently to any other narrator in the high republic so far. Bland performance almost ruins the story - took me many tries to get started because of it. Narrator has a monotone delivery, lacks depth of any character, and doesn’t pronounce a single name correctly.

A great effort in this series.
The story itself is excellent, covering the aftermath of The Rising Storm. Narrator is good, though mispronounces words at times. With no sound, and very little music, the audio book version is a bit of a let down. Hope other Star Wars audio titles have sound and music, as do most unabridged versions.

Difficult narration
Keylor leigh speaks way to monotonous to follow the detail-rich story properly. The story is also the weakest of series i have heard so far.

The most boring installment in the series
6 hours into the the audiobook I still don't see where this is going. You could probably fit the plot into 1-2 hours, which is why most interactions seem nonsensical or plain boring at best as they serve the purpose of stalling for time.

Boring, misleading, and long
There are very few important happenings that move story forward in this book. I could've been a semi interesting 3 hour long audiobook.
It starts somehow interesting, just to later stay a very unnecessary long time in Courascant. It's then when the story barely moves forward. To then in the two hours have what it look to be the pay off for your dreadful wait, but no. The fighting is scarce, done in a couple of minutes and again, very boring to be honest.
Justina here portraits the Jedi as incompetent in this last part, and makes them all fall so easily against the enemy. Leaving the main character (also a very generic and uninteresting character) to save the day. Ah, but also let's not kill the Jedi without justification, let's just stun them because the story needs it. There is too many of these forced and non-logic justifications to achieve the story the author wants to tell.
The book is less about star wars and more about young women falling in love or being confused about life and their place in it. Which is not wrong, but it is is you leave most of the "Star Wars things" on a second or third place of importance.
It is misleading because it seems in the cover that the 3 characters are the main characters. But no, Silvestre is, and Vernestra comes to a secondary roll mostly. And Reed, well, he speaks like 3-4 times and does nothing really to move the story forward. It's just there. Sometimes.
Very disappointing, I wish I could get my money back.
