New England is a walled off radioactive prison. People exhibiting extraordinary abilities are hunted for experiments. The only talent twenty-six-year-old Conthan has in life is his art and knack for sarcasm. When a cop threatens his life, Conthan discovers he has the ability to teleport. Hunted by the military and a woman with her own gifts, Conthan finds exiles in the Boston wastelands with powers of their own. For the first time, he sees potential to become a hero. But as he unravels a conspiracy threatening the world, he must decide between his survival and his humanity.

an entertaining story with an engaging plot

Eleanor Valentine is a powerful psychic able to predict the near future with astounding accuracy.  As an advisor to the president, she has used her powers to help steer the workings of government to positive outcomes.  She discovers that a horrible darkness looms for the world, the only solution is to assassinate the president, but fails in her attempt and is killed in the process.

Now forty years in the future, the world is playing out the way Eleanor predicted.  The children of Nostradamus, people with extraordinary abilities, are being rounded up or murdered outright as dangers to society.  Their only refuge is the radioactive wasteland of northern New England.  A small band of super humans, having received 40 year-old letters from Eleanor, finds their only hope of survival is to strike at the heart of the secret government organization trying to exterminate them.

There are many similarities to X-Men and the author even alludes to this humorously.  The characters are different in that they must discover their abilities on their own, or hopefully with help from their peers.  Most would just rather get along, integrating with society, but are not given that option as they are rounded up, or shot out of hand.  There are many interesting dynamics that make the characters more human than mutant.

It is an entertaining story with an engaging plot.  There is plenty of supernatural action to satisfy most lovers of the genre.  They aren’t invincible or supermen, just people with extraordinary skills they can barely control at times.

Robin J. Sitten performs the story well.  She has a pleasant voice and a matter-of-fact tone that gets out of the way.  Audiobook listeners might be more accustomed to the many actors who perform books dramatically.  Sitten is more about reading the story transparently, letting the listener imagine the action and drama in their own minds.  It is a personal taste, but she is highly competent and easy to listen to.

Nighthawks is an entertaining story with imaginative characters and plenty of supernatural action.  It is the first in a series of unknown length, wrapping up well, but giving us the groundwork for future sequels.  If you enjoy this book, you will be looking forward to future novels.

Not original but interesting.

It is common in this genre to have ideas borrowed from earlier stories so it is not surprising the Writer has done this with this Audio Book.

But the Book is well crafted and has a great variety of characters that can hold the listeners interest.

The Narrator made the Book more entertaining.

Stop reading reviews, and buy it already!

What did you love best about Nighthawks?

When I was given this book to review I was worried it would be a knock off of X-Men because the whole super-powered/mutant thing, but it turned out that I had nothing to worry about. For starters, this story takes place in a dystopia, there's not a special school for our heroes, they don't have cheesy super hero names, and nobody is wearing spandex. I also enjoyed the few jokes in reference to the X-Men that the author scattered throughout the story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Nighthawks?

The opening scene was the most memorable to me, and it did a wonderful job setting up the rest of the book.

Which character – as performed by Robin J Sitten – was your favorite?

Robin J Sitten did a straight read of the story so none of the characters stood out from each other based on her performance. What made the characters stand apart was the author's writing. That being said, my favorite character was Alyssa.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I wouldn't qualify any the reactions I had to this book as extreme, but I sure did laugh a lot.

Any additional comments?

I received a free copy of the audio book in return for an honest review.

Different.

Eleanor Valentine was a psychic to the President of the United States, she feels something is wrong and writes some letters to be sent to different people in the future. She then attempts to assassinate the president, but fails, and this leads to the culling of all mentalists. These letters she sent, shape some peoples lives, these people she chose have some kind of special ability and are known as The Children of Nostradamus. These children are often sequestered away by the government or sent to live in the Outlands, a place that was devastated by a nuclear attach and is now radioactive. No normal person can survive there.

This book was.....good. I've been trying to gather my thoughts abut it for the last few days and all I can say really is that it's good. I think the sheer amount of different POV's and the way it jumped from person to person just made it too much. I found it hard to connect to the characters because, just as I was getting a feel for one, it would jump to another one and it all just felt to hectic and all over the place.

Now saying that, I did still enjoy the story. I think if it wasn't so all over the place, I would have loved it because it had the makings of a really good book. I loved the super powers element and loved seeing them in action, I liked the characters and wanted to get to know them a bit better. I loved the X-Men feel to it, and I enjoyed the overall plot. I just feel a little lost with the way it was all over the place, and I'm still unsure who the Paladins are!

In all, it was good and I did enjoy it, I just wish it wasn't so higgledy-piggledy. I will definitely continue with the series because the world is very intriguing and I'm needing to see what happens with the characters!!

Robin J Sitten was ok. She was clear and easy to listen to, I just thought that she didn't differentiate the characters enough and it made it more confusing. While listening, I often thought that it was on about one character when it wasn't.

Fabulous Start of Series

Nighthawks is a fabulous first in series that kept my interest from start to finish. The story is told in multiple POV's which takes a bit to get used to but the narrator did a fantastic job and I was able to follow along easily once I got used to the flow. I look forward to more in this series.

Every day superhero book

The narrator was amazing. The story was good but not all consuming. I felt it was like the TV shows The Gifted, Heroes, No Ordinary Family and any x-men story out there. I wanted more than what I got. It certainly was enough to keep me entertained but I don’t know that I’ll think about these characters or this story now that I’m done with it.
I may listen to the next in the series as it becomes available. Just not certain of it.

Dystopian x men

I enjoyed the story which was well written and imagined. Its about an x man style society but post apocalypse. A young artist discovers his powers and is hunted by the government and police/police cyborgs in the outlands which is what is left of the post nuclear cities. He meets a group of other "powered" and they try to overthrow the government while figuring out clues from a powered pre-cognitive left in notes 30 years prior. My only problem was the narrators execution. Her voice is pleasant enough however her range is lacking. I couldn't tell one character from another and it did impact the enjoyment of the story significantly. Otherwise it was good, not sure I would listen to the next one on account of the narration but the story was excellent. An engaging read

This story is a bit odd on many fronts. Jumping in at the beginning it is easy to follow till it loses you. The story takes place in several time slices and uses time stamps to try and let you know when you are in the story. Although, with only a 40 year spread this did not work to well for me. I was eventually able to recognize the characters and was able to place the time by the people involved.
The killing of the main character at the beginning of the story was a bit confusing and I was tempted at several points to go back and figure out what I missed but I never did. It was explained enough at the end so that I did not go try again.

This story reminds me a lot of the X-Men series. If you liked them you will enjoy this excellent read.

Robin J Sitten did an excellent job reading this story.
