    Description

The Phage War had been a devastating conflict for the Terran Confederacy. Even with the destruction of their terrifying, implacable foe, humanity is still reeling. Political alliances are crumbling, and their mighty fleet is in tatters. There is nothing to celebrate, even after such a complete victory.

They soon learn that there are other stellar neighbors - and they've been watching the conflict with great interest. One species comes with an offer of friendship and alliance, but humanity is weary and distrustful, their only interactions with aliens having resulted in the near eradication of their kind.

Before the ashes of war have been fully swept away, Captain Celesta Wright is dispatched to the Frontier with a small taskforce to investigate a mysterious signal while the Confederacy struggles to hold itself together. A partnership with this new species could help accelerate the recovery effort, but is the offer too good to be true? Can humanity risk another fight with an advanced alien species right on the heels of the bloodiest war that had ever been waged?

New Frontiers is the first book of the Expansion Wars Trilogy, an all-new adventure in the Black Fleet universe.

    read black fleet first!

I didn't notice that this is a follow-up series. you quickly understand what's going on. but I suggest you read the others first. other than that a good enough read

An auspcious start to a new trilogy

Joshua Dalzelle's ability to write about new and interesting scientific achievements and phenomenon in such a way as to almost have me believe that they already exist is uncanny as much as it is entertaining. It was also good to see many/most of the primary characters return from the Black Fleet Trilogy, albeit, in changed roles. This went a long way in re-invigorating me with a new sense of anticipation as the story unfolds. I was particularly impressed with Sr. Capt. Celesta Wright coming of her own in this book and while not as swashbuckling a personality as Wolfe, her instincts and command leadership was every bit as rewarding to experience.

There's not any acknowledgements I can give to Mark Boyett that I haven't repeatedly made before on his other works other than to assure everyone that he continues to excel as a narrator.

    Natural continuation of Black Fleet

While I very much enjoyed the Black Fleet Trilogy, I wasn't really pleased with the ending. So I wasn't sure I wanted to get into this continuation series. But I'm really glad I decided to give it a chance.

While we have many of the original Black Fleet characters, we have a new enemy and very different and several other interesting new characters. While this feels a lot like Black Fleet, it's not a rehash. The characters have evolved with the time passed, we have a mix of old and new ships, and Senior Captain Wright has developed into her own character with her own tactics instead of a rehash of Wolfe.

The book has a couple of twists in it, but they are kinda easy to see coming. But that's okay, because it made me feel like I was doing my analysis of the enemy properly.

While I felt this book's purpose was to introduce the cast and get us in the mood for the rest of the series, at no time was I not fully enjoying it. Character development was interesting and the action was nail-bitingly exciting.

Mark Boyett does another stellar job in narrating this book.

    yawn...

The best thing about this book is the cover art. Not even Mark Boyett could save it.

Reasonable follow on to Black Fleet

While this is a stand alone series it does follow the same characters as Black Fleet. Very good narration and reasonable storyline. Will need to reserve some comments to see where next book in series goes. This first book did not cover a lot of ground.

Good old jackson wolf back again!

Liked the book, read all books in the black fleet series. Seems pikes voice has changed by the narriator and some of the characters have the voice of jackson as well at times making it hard to tell who is talking. None of these issues existed on the 3 black fleet books leading me to believe the narriator was not as into the work as the three prior.

    Story was good.

    Great Start to Series

I love the universe Joshua Dalzelle is creating. This is a continuation of the Blackfleet Trilogy. His writing and characterization continues to impress me as it improves throughout his books.
