    Description

New entry in the best-selling Monster Hunter International series by Dragon Award-winning authors Larry Correia and Sarah A. Hoyt

When Owen Pitt and the rest of the Monster Hunter International crew are called away to mount a month’s-long rescue mission in a monster-infested nightmare dimension, Julie Shackleford - Owen’s wife and descendant of MHI founder Bubba Shackleford - is left behind. Her task: hold down the fort and take care of her new baby son Ray. Julie’s devoted to the little guy, but the slow pace of office work and maternity leave are starting to get to her. But when a routine field call brings her face-to-face with an unspeakable evil calling itself Brother Death, she’ll get more excitement than she ever hoped for.

Julie is the Guardian of a powerful ancient artifact known as the Kamaresh Yar, and Brother Death wants it. In the wrong hands, it could destroy reality as we know it. Julie would die before giving it up.

Then Ray goes missing, taken by Brother Death. The price for his safe return: the Kamaresh Yar. If Julie doesn’t hand over the artifact it means death - or worse - for baby Ray. With no other choice left to her, Julie agrees to Brother Death’s demands. But when you’re dealing with an ancient evil, the devil is in the details.

To reclaim her son, Julie Shackleford will have to fight her way through necromantic death cults, child-stealing monsters, and worse. And she’ll have to do it all before Brother Death can unleash the Kamaresh Yar.

It’s one woman against an army of monsters. But Julie Shackleford is no ordinary woman - she’s one tough mother!

    PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW

This is NOT a Monster Hunter International book as we know it! Because I absolutely LOVE the MHI world, I automatically bought it without looking at the reviews and did not notice the addition of an author. Big mistake. Larry Correia apparently had no part in the writing of the book - not his style of writing or his sense of humor. The narrator is NOT the narrator I am used to hearing for the previous books in this series and whom I adore. Oliver Wyman's voice is one of the MHI main strengths. and his absence ruins the whole book for me because the voices of the characters I love are all missing. On top of that, the narrator of MH Guardian is not good. Julie is a strong mature Southern woman. The female narrator in MH Guradian sounds like a California teenager. Not at all the way Julie should sound - and I mention again that the voices of all my favorite characters are totally different, and wrong, Totally ruins the listening experience. Note to producers - you should NEVER change narrators in a well loved series, particularly when the narrator being replaced, such as Oliver Wyman, is fantastic. Doing so basically changes ALL the characters in the book and in the MHI world, the characters are a major draw.

I strongly recommend that you NOT purchase this book if you are a MHI world lover. You will be very disappointed. I am returning this book unfinished because I could not get through the first few chapters. Correia, why did you and your producers do this to your loyal fans? It would have been better for there to be no book at all instead of this horrible offering. Really hurts your brand.

    Total Disappointment

I listen to audiobooks every single day and have never felt strongly enough about a book to leave a review, but this book is so terrible I have to do it with this one.

I love this series, and have listened to each installment MANY times. However, this installment in the series is terrible.

First of all, the new narrator apparently hasn't listened to previous installments and misprounces word like "Harbinger ". Also, Julie, a Southern girl from Alabama, would have a Southern accent. There are other items like this.

I could live with that, but there is no way Julie would think and talk the way the character in this book would. Julie is a strong, independent woman of action, not the hand wringer in this story.

I strongly suspect Larry Correia didn't write much, if any, of this installment.

    trash

series has fallen off... seems like an obligatory yearly cash grab for Corriea and Bane books. The first 3 books were great.

Can’t really skip it, but not like the rest

I’ve read this series, and the Memoirs set, multiple times. This Audible book is terrible. The reader was bad for this character, and I have to imagine Mr. Correa wrote an outline, then had serious life issues that caused him to be fully out of touch with this text..

Maybe the original reader could have covered over some of the poor writing, but this reader was even less engaged with the Monster Hunter series than the author! Name one series where changing the reader in the middle was a good thing? This women has no southern accent, missed Julie’s normal behavior/attitude completely, and gave us a whiney ‘girl’ that couldn’t pronounce Earl’s last name, or any of the European monster hunters’s last name either. Shouldn’t the new reader at least listen to the previous books?

As a reader, you likely need this book to get to the next one. But don’t expect to enjoy it. I didn’t. I’d of thought the editor could have stopped this travesty? When Butcher and Audible blew Ghost Story, he manned up and had it re-read by his partner voice actor—for free—but how does one recover from both poor writing and poor reading? Not sure. Really disappointed.

My suggestion—don’t buy this until Correa comes out with the next book—then listen to the two in order—hopefully the next book will eclipse this one. Crushingly disappointing.

    Commits a Cardinal Sin

I think this is an absolute sin for any long running book serries. *NEVER* Replace the narrator if there is any possible alternative.

Personally, I find the new narrator fine in quality. But that's not the issue. Replacing the narrator in an ongoing book serries is like when you're watching a favorite TV show and they suddenly replace an Actor... only, worse, because this is replacing the entire cast plus the director. It doesn't matter if the replacement is good, it's supremely disruptive.

A huge part of a book serries is getting attached to the characters, and for Audiobooks, the narration of the characters is nearly as important as the actual writing. Suddenly having all the characters you are attached to speaking in different voices and losing all the quirks and inflections you are used to is just massively jarring. It just shouldn't be done.

    You can't change the narrator

Sorry Larry-but this was a swing and a miss. The series was supposed to conclude with this book. This book is purely a money grab with a piss-poor excuse for a narrator. I will be requesting my credit back.

New narrator, New MC, should be a side story!

With a new narrator, and new main character. New writing style and focus. This is a side story or a new series. not book 7....

    Disappointed...

It is clear Larry Correia did not write this book...it’s painful. The story lacks the descriptive language that makes the series work. It is flat out corny. I will be taking audible up on their return policy.

PS. Reading these great reviews leads me to believe they are fake. This book was terrible:(

    No drawl

It was like listening to bad fan fiction with worse narration. Bailey Carr doesn't attempt a southern accent and over emphasizes random words, it was really difficult to finish the book. Julie has always been a strong female character, in this book she comes off as whiney, weak teenager. I've always been a big fan of Larry's books and this series, but this whole book is bad.

    Tolle Story, nervende Sprecherin

Worst if the series for sure

The reader sounds whiney all the time it really gets annoying. Also the co author was not a good choice. The whole time july was being whiney and not the same character we are used from the other books. The plot is alright but the book is far from the other ones. I even cought myselfe waiting for it to be over so i could move on to other books. Very unfortunate as i really like the series.
