    Description

Ben is now Draco Rex the dragon king, and his dynasty is steadily growing.

His women give him a new dragon-kin child every few weeks, he has fortified and improved his village and palace, and the water dragons are coming back from the brink of extinction.

Life is good for him, but the gods have further plans, so it is time for the new ruler to build a raft and expand his domain.

    I couldn't finish

I held off on reviewing the first book, thinking I'd give the second one a go. I quite liked the premise and wanted to see where Jacobs would take the story...

    I didn't last long.

I felt from the first book that Ben's devotion to these new women bordered on sycophantic. It was so bad it read like he was enthralled. Instant utter devotion to their cause with no time to build proper characters or relationships.

It's so cringe I just didn't enjoy listening. Everything that came out of his mouth was so over the top and melodramatic that he doesn't read like a real person, more like a cheesy soap opera star. The women are the same, by and large.

I feel like this story needed to spend way more time building up the relationship between the struggling village and the otherworlder. Maybe he's forced to escape from them in the beginning of book 1 and survive more alone, but over time realises how bad they have it and how he can't just sit by and not help. He could have helped them from the shadows until his intentions were crystal, and you build from there.

Instead Jacobs dives into the baby making and cheesy white knighting like it's going out of style. He falls in love with everyone instantly and they him and babies come literally 3 months later...

It just feels rushed and cheesy as hell. It's unfortunate for Jacobs because I'm just gonna compare everything of his I read with the Skullduggery series, which is far better paced with infinitely better characters and a much more interesting world...

I also dinged 2 stars on the performance for the squaky voice Marissa Parness used for the healers... they sound like annoying pixies. Was not a fan.

    I'll be returning this

    love it

I love the narration and acting that Daniel and Marissa do so much that even though I can read all of the books for free I'm willing to blow entire paychecks just to hear them read to me. love them both so much keep up the wonderful reading!

    It only gets better.

I wrote a review for the first book as well and will leave one for each of the series as I go. I'm really enjoying the story and my reviews may be best read in order.

As I said in my review of book one, there are a lot of predictable moments in the story, but I personally don't mind that because the way the story gets told is very well done.

This book picks up a lot faster than Book 1 since it's a direct sequel to the last, with a minimal time gap of only about 2 weeks or so from the end of the first book. It begins much more intense and ends up answering a lot of questions the reader might have about the setting.

The fight scenes are much more intense as well, showing how much stronger and used to the new world Ben is becoming. Along with the fight scenes, the adult scenes are also still very well detailed and don't feel stale or out of place.

    Uh... okay I guess.

The story, was better, but still hard to get behind. I love the VA for the story. But I will do more research... there is a third and fourth book that need reading.

    book 2

Absolutely enjoying this series so far. After the first book I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. Now that they are setting sail for other islands I'm excited to continue the series and see what other species are in store.

    Prolific Hero

The story is great and has been developing nicely. But damn, everytime this guy has sex he gets another woman pregnant except for Mira. lol. Seriously, keep up the good work.

Not recommended unless you're eager to continue

The first book was.....passable, but this one and the next one are just in the cringe category. For one thing, I can't stand the whole accelerated pregnancy and growth gimmick, where the child goes from conception to full grown adult within a year or sometimes even less. You also never really get the feeling that the main character is ever in any kind of real danger. The author puts him into dire situations , but there's always the feeling like "it's no big deal, he'll just Mary-Sue it." When he does have to deal with a death among his friends, it's just someone that was introduced shortly before they're killed off and it's obvious that was the only reason they were introduced, to try to create some kind of feeling of loss, but it just doesn't work.

My recommendation is to move on to another series, but if you're really eager to continue the story then have at it; I realize that what one person finds difficult to get through, another person may be completely engaged. This series just isn't for me, unfortunately I bought the second and third book together and already listened to them both.......the third one doesn't really get much better..... although the new race of girls hasn't had to deal with any pregnancies yet, so no telling how rapidly their children grow yet.

    Very Good

Interesting characters and an interesting plot I find the study of the different societies interesting. I’m very interested to see the progression through the islands and the cultural differences that are manifested. It will be interesting to see how the narrators interpret the various cultures vocally.
