Description
Brian Cox stars as the Edinburgh detective in eight episodes of the BBC Radio 4 series.
Inspired by the real-life memoirs of a Victorian inspector in Scotland, James McLevy prowls the dark streets of 1860s Edinburgh bringing criminals to justice, with the assistance of Constable Mulholland.
'To Keep Him Honest': with big bets on a champion boxing match, the local crooks keep McLevy busy.
- 'Picture of Innocence': a high court judge is dead, and suspicion falls on his wife.
- 'The Chosen One': the Princess of the Occult is a sell-out success, but McLevy thinks she's a fraud.
- 'The Reckoning': as Jean prepares for a wedding, death stalks McLevy.
- 'A Bolt from the Blue': a corpse is found floating in Leith docks.
- 'End of the Line': two ladies discover the body of a drunken Italian aristocrat at Waverley station.
- 'Jack O'Diamonds': Jean Brash plans revenge on a sadistic client, but he is not a man to cross lightly.
- 'Queen of Spades': Jean's battle with Caleb Grant has heartbreaking consequences.
Written by David Ashton, these atmospheric radio dramas costar Siobhan Redmond as Jean Brash and Michael Perceval-Maxwell as Constable Mulholland.

consistently good storytelling
another great collection of the dramatized stories of Edinburgh detective James McLevy. The characters are well fleshed out, the plots always interesting, and the choice of actors for all the parts is consistently good. The best part is Brian Cox as McLevy whose dry style fits the pieces perfectly. These 45 minute episodes are excellent listening and just the right length.

Interesting Stories - Excellent Characters
After listening to the first episodes of Seasons 1 and 2, I had enjoyed everything about the show and wanted to hear more. The actors became their characters, and Inspector McLevy, Jean Brash, and Constable Mulholland were real people to me. I began to have a picture of them in my mind, and I began to feel as though I knew them. I bought Seasons 3 and 4 and enjoyed the stories even more, getting to know more characters and settings in Edinburg, Scotland, the parish of Leith, the police station, the bawdy house, the Just Land and other locations. I became more familiar with the Scottish dialect and could understand and enjoy the dialogue more. It seems like the episodes became more connected and organized by the time I got to Seasons 5 and 6. Also, the relationship between McLevy and Jean Brash has been developed to make the two characters more attractive and more interesting. I am looking forward to downloading Seasons 7 and 8 when my next credit becomes available. I would recommend McLevy to anyone who loves good detective stories with down to earth characters, well developed and portrayed as believable people who lived and died in nineteenth century Scotland. McLevy is based upon a real detective by that name who lived in nineteenth century Scotland.

Just great
I've always liked McLevy - Complex characters always fighting their conflicting personas, fighting each other, introspection not found in other characters. There's an honesty in each of them, criminals and cops and semi criminals that's quite charming. Jean's and James' relationship is full of delight, sexy interchange, cagey actions..always surprising. I love the actors - they are all so perfect for each role. I cant imagine I would like to listen to anyone else in any role. I discovered these books on BBC 4Xtra, and am so delighted I can buy them. Thanks.

Superb
I’ve purchased the entire series and could not be more pleased. The characters come alive and I look forward to each episode. Also listening in chronological order increases the character and relational aspect of the series.
