    Description

What happens when a group of tough vigilantes meets up with a big-hearted family with boundary issues?

Reese: It’s supposed to be an easy job. You know, the kind you get after you’ve been gone a while and the boss is unsure of how capable you still are? But then there’s a mugging, an abduction, two thugs, and a blackmail scheme.

And smack-dab in the middle of it is a beautiful lost soul who needs me. The scared, young gamer-geek pushes all my protective buttons and awakens something inside me that’s ready to dive right in and inhale the man.

But how could I have anything to offer someone like Ben? I’m a mess. Injured, scarred, practically closeted, the recognizable son of a famous man...There’s no way I can ask him to give me a shot at forever. Right?

Ben: It seems like I’ve been looking out for myself my entire life. Heck, I was even given away the day I was born. And, yeah, maybe if my adoptive parents had survived, I would have had a nice life. But they didn’t. And I don’t. Instead, I’m forced to put up with a hateful, scheming foster parent for the sake of sticking around to care for my little sister.

Only, when a blackmail plan lands little Georgie in the hands of thugs, it’s clear I’m her only hope. At least until I meet the big, strong bodyguard someone sends to watch over me.

Reese is everything I’ve ever daydreamed about: protective, attentive, affectionate, and dedicated. But he’s hiding something, and I don’t have the time or energy to figure out what. Because time is running out, and Georgie is the only family I have left.

Until the biological brother who never wanted me shows up and turns everything on its head.

After having finally accepted it’s just Georgie and me, suddenly falling for my protector and being surrounded by Griff and the Marian clan makes me question everything I’ve ever known about myself and what defines a family.

Can a guy with a broken past ever build a family with someone who seems too good to be true?

Listening order note: Can be listened to as a stand-alone.

While the authors recommend listening to both the Made Marian series by Lucy Lennox and the Protectors series by Sloane Kennedy, it isn't required in order to understand the story. At the least, you may want to consider Grounding Griffin (Book 4, Made Marian series by Lucy Lennox) and Unexpected (Book 10, The from the Protectors series by Sloane Kennedy) to get a little bit of background. However, this novel, despite being a crossover, has been written in a way that it can be listened to on its own.

    I Miss the Marians

So my policy is to give a 5 star review if I listen to something because I know that the 5 star rating system is really binary and the nuances between 3, 4, and 5 stars negatively impact books and book searches which is an author's livelihood and I want both of these authors to keep writing.
On that note I love Michael Pauley and I love Lucy Lennox but......Sloane Kennedy and the Protector series can be really dramatic and overly angsty. And unfortunately that was a main feature of the first 7+ hours of this book. I think I wanted this to be a mostly Marian crossover and I was sorely disappointed. I missed the Marians sooo much...They have almost no role except to be the focus of Ben's bitterness. They are nothing but concerned and kind and all Ben can do is focus on his attraction to Reese, his bitterness that Griffin had it better than him, and of course the fact that he is being pursued by mostly mysterious villains (a common feature in the protector series but did not translate for me in the Marian world.) The lengths that the Marians go to help Ben and Georgie (at the expense of their own safety no less) are largely dismissed and it made it very hard for me to like Ben at all. I usually enjoy the dual POV but I felt the attempt to blend the Protectors and Marians was largely one-sided. Reese performed his part as a bridge because he was actually connected to all the Protector characters but Ben's tenuous at best/antagonistic relationship with the Marian characters made me want to rant at him which took me right out of the story. Perhaps if you are a Protectors fan and not a person that has read or liked the Marian series this book will be right up your alley otherwise be prepared to miss your Marians.

    ✫✫ 4 Stars ✫✫

I went into this one having only listened to the Made Marian series, I was worried I would feel like I was missing something since I haven't listened to the Protector Series and to be honest I did but only a tiny bit and that just made me want to start that series right away. The only reason I would say that I wished I had finished both first is because I knew all the Made Marian characters and felt like they had all these friends I wasn't privy too LOL. I loved this story even if it was a little insta-love for my taste. I also loved all the alpha men with cute kid moments. I'll be impatiently waiting for the rest of the Protectors series to be on audible.

The narration was good. He isn't my favorite but he is growing on me.

    so frustrating!

3 and a half hours in and I'm having a really hard time connecting to Ben's character.

6 hours in and I'm convinced his only redeeming quality is his devotion to his sister.

the best part was a the tarantula

I love the Maid Marian series and I love Michael Pauley but this story was a miss for me.
I think there were too many characters and an unrealistic storyline. Somebody's on the run looking for a computer chip and all these men can drop their lives to protect Ben and Georgie. REALLY?
I'll be honest with you Aunt Tilly drives me nuts in these books.
if you're devoted to both series, get it, but if not I would say pass on this one.

I will forever be a fan of Michael Pauley..

Michael Pauley can narrate the entire section of the obituary and I will still one click it and listen now! He is definitely in my top three favorite narrators, because damn is voice is swoon! Anyways, huge fan of Lucy Lennox, read all her books and love Sloane Kennedy, I've read about 35% of her books (don't hate me).

i enjoyed Made Mine (I wish the Marian clan would adopt me) and I loved it even more because Michael Pauley narrated it. The only, only thing I did not like but didn't affect my rating, was how whiny Ben was. That was the only thing I did not enjoy, however I stick by my 5 star rating because Michael Pauley made it bearable. Happy listening all!

    Sheer Perfection!!

Absolutely brilliant crossover of 2 of the best series ever! The storyline is magnificent and I love seeing so many of the Marians and the Protectors. Watching Ben and Reese’s relationship develop is spectacular. They are so good together. Love Georgie, what a great kid. Ben and Reese have a lot of personal issues to work through but I love how they do it together and I love how protective Reese is of Ben. It was great to see Griff finally find his brother and I love how supportive and loving both the Marians and the Protectors are with one another. I would definitely love more crossover books!
Michael Pauley was a brilliant narrator for this story. He managed so many different voices expertly. It really was incredible to hear all of the different characters and really feel all of their emotions!

    Well-Blended

This book can be read as a stand-alone but it definitely helps to have some knowledge of the other books.  I’ve listened to all the Marian books as well as the first three Protector books, so I had some idea but, truthfully, there were many many many characters packed into this book.  If you focus on Reese, Ben, and their immediate dilemmas, you can make it through without too much confusion.

The effort is well worth it, I promise.

Ben is alone in the world except for his sister Georgie whom he protects with all his strength and energy.  He survives as a gamer, but he’s focused on keeping his sister safe and when he fails at that, he’s devastated.

Reese has failed at something recently as well and Ben is his second chance.  A chance for redemption. But he’s got a lot of baggage to deal with if he’s going to succeed in protecting Ben and getting Georgie back.  Plus, there’s the undeniable attraction between the two men each of whom are in different stages of their acknowledgement of their homosexuality.

    Ben: Who are you?

    Reese: No one.

Ben: Tell me one thing about you that no one else knows.

Reese: The thing you were doing to me a little while ago…stopping you was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

A little while later Ben says, “I’d be on you like Mario on a mushroom” and I actually laughed out loud.  These are two men without a lot of experience trying to find their way around both a sexual and an emotional relationship.

Unexpectedly, despite the seriousness of the situation, there are moments of great humor when I really enjoyed the bi-play including Irene, Granny, and Aunt Tilly from the Marian series.  I hope I’m as feisty when I’m in my eighties and every time I come across these women, I’m guaranteed a broad smile.

There is a lot of family drama in the book, as expected.  Ben has felt abandoned his entire life and facing a welcoming Marian clan and his long-lost brother is overwhelming. I tried to follow why his parents kept Griffin and gave up Ben, but it didn’t make sense to me.  Then there was Reese and his family drama.  Talk about having a painful legacy burdening him. No wonder he felt the need to stay so far in the closet.

Near the end of the book there was a crisis and I thought it was a tad predictable, but it did lead to the following exchange:

Reese – Babe, do you even know how to drive?

Ben – Does Grand Theft Auto count?

    Reese – No.

Ben – Then no. Not so much.

It was great Ben wanted to help, but his naiveté and young age sometimes hampered him.  If Reese hadn’t been so green in some respects, I would have wondered about the balance of the relationship.

Finally, I have to say how much I loved all the children in the book but especially Georgie.  Precocious is only one adjective I would use to describe the little girl.  Her ability to charm every tough man around her, as well as the older women, was adorable.  She was a good foil and tension breaker during some of the dark times. Also, Reese’s nickname for her was perfect.

This leads me to Michael Pauley’s narration.  He performed all of the Made Marian series and I adore him.  His voice for Georgie was just precious and, as always, he handled each character with a unique voice.  Oh, and his Aunt Tilly is always right on point.

I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

    Unbelievable

I had a really hard time getting into this book. There were just so many parts of it that I felt were unbelievable. Maybe a part of it was the writing approach of the two authors or the two worlds of the previous book series, but I couldn’t feel for the relationship. A majority of the beginning of the book was in a hotel room and then finally a winery that felt like a vacation for the characters. The lack of reality when it comes to children, crime, and holding a job was hard to suspend. I think you really needed to read the other stories to understand the characters in this one. But the angst was too much and if that what the protectors series is like then I doubt I’ll ever read them.

    Love it!

I am a huge fan of both authors so naturally this is a must have book for me. I love Sloane Kennedy's Protectors series as well as Lucy Lennox's Made Marian series so this book with both groups makes my day. Ben and Reese are very sweet together. I like seeing Reese stick by Ben through everything. I also like that Ben gets to teach Reese new things. This book is best enjoyed if you've read at least one of the other series so you have a feel for the boat load of characters.

    Fantastic!

Kennedy and Lennox are a great team. Made Marian series and Protectors series come together in a seamless way. Bursting with intense emotions, action, family and chaos, this story has everything we love about both series! Griff finally finds his long lost brother- but it isn’t the happy reunion he wants. Reese has his first assignment after finally healing. Newcomer Ben is a mysterious wildcard. Throw in a precocious four year old, Russian bad guys, a gorgeous vineyard full of Marians, a sighting of the President, and a big fuzzy tarantula, and you’ve got one fantastic story! Michael Dean is fabulous as always- not just narration, but top notch voice acting! If you haven’t read the Protectors or Made Marian series, now is a great time to start!

    Ganz nett

Die Geschichte ist nett, die Chemie stimmt zwischen den Protagonisten. Die Marian-Familie nervt mich aber irgendwie. Das ist alles etwas over the top. Deswegen 1 Stern Abzug. Der Subplot mit der Entführung wäre auch ausbaufähig gewesen, zum Ende verflacht das Ganze etwas.
