Description

Get ready for an adventure tale in its purest form, a thrilling and elegantly told account of a group of British schoolboys marooned on a tropical island. Alone in a world of uncharted possibilities, devoid of adult supervision or rules, the boys begin to forge their own society, their own rules, their own rituals. With this seemingly romantic premise, and through the seemingly innocent acts of children, Golding exposes the duality of human nature itself: the dark, eternal divide between order and chaos, intellect and instinct, structure and savagery.

Critiques

" Lord of the Flies gives the reader a lucid and chillingly objective mirror to our modern society. William Golding's narration is as impartial as his work, yet his grumbly, grandfatherly voice, complete with mid-sentence sniffs and swallows, is intimate." ( AudioFile)

Classic story

I had to to read this book in school, and found it amazing. it brought back fond memories.
It is refreshing to hear the author reading his own story.
What a fascinating book and I say this book should be put in the schools for the kids of today and the future to enjoy.

Fantastic

I read this book as a child, but I didn't feel the same about it as I do now. I is really compelling and the picture it paints of society is still true today. I have found myself over and over again thinking of this book and how society behaves, it is so poignant. That is why this book is a classic and should be read by everyone.

Great story - bad narration

I love this tale. Read it years ago and so looked forward to hearing it. However, the author should NOT have read this book. Had some difficulties with his lack of expressions. Quality of sound improved a little after chapter 5. I hope that some day it is re-done with a different narrator (unabridged of course!).

No wonder this is a classic

I had to read this for my English class over summer break and while I don't like reading especially over vacation I decided to get the audiobook. The performance of the narrator really captured the emotions of the characters. This is a very well written book that everybody should read. The message of a lawless society being bound to fail is great.

Excellent Purchase

This classic is read by none better than its author and Golding's brief explanation of how this novel came into being and his defense against critics who call him a sexist are brilliant! Bravo!!

Great Book.....Great Listen

I read this story as a child and loved it then. It was riveting and disturbing at the same time. Mr Golding created a great story of the differences we face in our world of diversity. Good intentions turned ugly by man's own lust for power. The cruelty of life can be seen on a school playground or a deserted island. By understanding the conflict the author portrays to us, we better understand ourselves. Complex beings prone to external influences in a cruel universe, but always enlightened to a sense of reality.
