    Description

Ian Carmichael stars as Lord Peter Wimsey in these classic BBC radio dramatisations of Dorothy L Sayers' Golden Age crime novels.

Gentleman detective Lord Peter Wimsey starred in a number of novels and short stories by Dorothy L Sayers. These full-cast adaptations - first broadcast on BBC radio between 1979 and 2010 - are cherished by crime aficionados worldwide.

Murder Must Advertise sees Lord Peter going undercover in an advertising agency to investigate the death of a copywriter.

The Nine Tailors finds the aristocratic detective stranded in a remote village, where he is drawn into a case of stolen jewels and an unidentified body.

Gaudy Night takes place at Harriet Vane’s old Oxford college, where a series of spiteful pranks and poison-pen letters have torn apart the academic community. With Lord Peter’s help, can she uncover the perpetrator?

In Busman’s Honeymoon, newlyweds Harriet and Peter have their marital bliss disturbed by a body in the basement - and are once again embroiled in a murder investigation.

These evocative dramas also feature Allan Cuthbertson, Peter Jones, Joanna David and Sarah Badel.

Only one negative thing to warn you about...

and that, I'm sad to inform you, is that you will eventually reach the end of the book.

    No Headings

I really wish Audible would designate chapters by title so I could easily find the story I want to listen to, without having to preview every single chapter. While well done, this was difficult to navigate.

    Fun Detective Radio Play

Growing up in Scotland during the 1940 to late 1950's, our home entertainment was the Wirekess, Radio to America. Much the same as in America during that era. Many of these shows were much !ike, we'd see later on Television. But detective plays were my favorite. We would turn off the lights and listen by the flickering flames.. Made it more mysterious and the sound effects, added to the effects. Was also a fan of Ian Carmichael from his movies. So besides the memories, I really enjoyed the plays. Just a real fun listen. Have to admit lover hearing all those British accents, I grew up with.

Love, love, love Peter Wimsey and Harriet Wimsey

The only fly on in this ointment is the actress playing Harriet Wimsey in Busman's Honeymoon. She speaks with great snobbery about the matter of servants and snooty foods. Harriet has just left a life where she still is not quite accustomed to having money and in fact spent every penny she had on her bridal outfit. She's very sympathetic and not at all snobbish, so this jarring little note is off-putting.

    Otherwise, a great little collection.

    Delicious read. Pretentious writing?

I enjoy everything Dorothy L. Sayers ever wrote, and she evokes her period, with all its prejudices, brilliantly.
Several reviewers have complained about the difficulty of sorting the dramas.
Chapters 1- 6. Murder Must Advertise. Sayers worked in an agency herself, so part of this drama is a fascinating glimpse into that world in another era. You might think part of it verges on the silly, as it tries to portray the "gay young things" of the period.
Chapters 7-14. Nine Tailors. To me, possibly the best mystery story ever written. (Or runner up to Tey's Brat Farrar?) Set in the fens. Wonderful characters.
Chapters 15-19. Gaudy Night. A paean to Oxford, and to educated women. Or the question of the '30's: what do women give up to be educated?
Chapters 20-25. Busman's Honeymoon. Murder in a fascinating old English fixer-upper.

    Superb!

Always fun to hear Ian Carmichael as Lord Peter Wimsey. A little disconcerting to hear his older self in Gaudy Night and his younger self in Busman's Honeymoon, but glad both were included.

    Lord Peter

I absolutely love this series, the author, the production and the wonderful actors. I hope to listen to more of Lord Peter. But if that’s not possible, I will re-listen to all of these books!

    Wonderful!

I thoroughly enjoyed the LPW radio series! Older radio performances are in a league of their own.

Love Lord Peter and this one is the best!

Great voice acting as usual. Gaudy Night was a bit of a change from the regular stories, but I highly enjoyed it.
