    Description

    New York Times Best Seller

The best-selling author of The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry equips readers to recognize and resist the lies that seek to rob them of peace and freedom.

Live No Lies is brilliant, deep, scriptural, and will equip you to face the enemy and fight.” (Jennie Allen, New York Times best-selling author of Get Out of Your Head)

We are at war. Not with a foreign government or domestic terrorists or a creepy new artificial intelligence hell-bent on taking over the world. No, it’s a war we feel deep inside our own chests: we are at war with lies.

The problem isn’t so much that we tell lies but that we live them. We let them into our bodies, and they sabotage our peace. All around us in the culture and deep within our own body memories are lies: deceptive ideas that wreak havoc on our emotional health and spiritual well-being, and deceptive ideas about who God is, who we are, and what the good life truly is.

The choice is not whether to fight or not fight, but whether we win or surrender.

Ancient apprentices of Jesus developed a paradigm for this war; they spoke of the three enemies of the soul: the devil, the flesh, and the world. Live No Lies taps into this ancient wisdom from saints of the Way and translates the three enemies for the modern era, with all its secularism and sophistication. As a generation, we chuckle at the devil as a premodern myth, we are confused by Scripture’s teaching on the flesh in an age where sensual indulgence is a virtue not a vice, and we have little to no category for the New Testament concept of the world.

In this provocative and practical book, bestselling author John Mark Comer combines cultural analysis with spiritual formation. He identifies the role lies play in our spiritual deformation and lays out a strategic plan to overcome them.

Do you feel the tug-of-war in your own heart, the inner conflict between truth and lies? The spirit and the flesh? The Way of Jesus and the world? It’s time to start winning. It’s time to live no lies...

    Commentaires

“This is the book I’ve been waiting for and one of the most important books a follower of Jesus will ever read. It will become a classic.” (Christine Caine, founder of A21 and Propel Women)

“John Mark Comer is a gift to the church. He writes with adept cultural nuance, theological savvy, and refreshing spiritual depth. In Live No Lies, he’s taken on a multilayered, ancient topic and brilliantly rearticulated it for our generation. This is a gem.” (Rich Villodas, lead pastor of New Life Fellowship and author of The Deeply Formed Life)

“In a time that feels full of contradictions and confusion, John Mark does a masterful job of laying out what is true, what true is, and why it matters deeply that we know the truth. This is the book for our day.” (Annie F. Downs, New York Times best-selling author of That Sounds Fun)

    Is this a political book?

This book I thought was going to be about lies and goes to combat them in my life. Mostly it was. However, we all know the best lie is mostly true, especially if you back it up with quotes from people who are, or have been in the past and are now gone. The author says several times that he has no political agenda, well when you say things that are marinaded in politics and social justice after saying "I have no political agenda." I kind of feel like I am being misled at best. I truly think that this guy is genuine in his social justice belief, but that is also what makes him dangerous. I would not recommend this book to my family. I think he does put some things together nicely, but the poison that you have ingest a long with it really made me want to vomit.

    Wow..

Well, I just finished and am restarting, there is SO MUCH going on here! The Spirit is definitely in this, so many soul feels, so much action to take.. I need the paper version to take notes in now!! Highly recommend, especially if you're in a city literally setting the tone for "the world" and feeling like you're drowning, we're not alone!

    Reminders, revelations and practical help

Full of reminders of truths I already knew, mind blowing revelations and practical help. I finished this book better equipped to move towards spiritual formation - a term I didn’t understand before reading this book. I also have awareness of tools (spiritual disciplines) that will help me fight the enemies of my soul…if I will choose to obey Jesus and put all of this knowledge into practice.

    Political.

I never leave harsh reviews, I came into this reading exited to learn but an hour in I’m hearing someone with clear biases even while pretending not to.

I understand that political issues are hard to avoid during these times, but truly disliked the approach.

I’m halfway through, so I’m leaving a 1 star review.

I’ll keep an open mind for the second half and come back and update it if my opinion changes.

The premise is intriguing, but the execution is much to be desired

John Mark has nuggets of truth in his book, but he mixes American culture with Biblical Christianity. As a result of this, he creates a thesis dissonance that seeks to convince you subtly of what he pretends to be against: to be living no lies by using biblical lies to convince you. He does it using Christianese, and feel good delivery. Very authoritarian, and deceptive. Beware.

    Disappointed

I tried to make it through the entire book but couldn’t. Despite the authors repeated attempts to say he was not political, there were many political undertones. I also felt there were so many things that could have been said simply and clearly but it felt as though more words were used, not to explain something better, but to impress an audience. This book was a disappointment. Unlike myself, I hope you can eat the fish and spit out the bones; I had to stop eating.

This book gets my highest recommendation. Listen to it again and again. JMC is our generation’s clearest Christian thinker.

    Read this book!

    Honest. Clear. Practical. Approachable.
John Mark has a way of drawing on deep and ancient concepts and presenting them in modern language that is both approachable and challenging. This book is a must read for any person asking questions about what being a follower of Jesus should and could look like in a world that increasingly presents versions of Christianity that look less and less like Christ.

    A Must Read

A clear vision of what we need to do as Christians to make a difference. His words pierced my soul, making me re-examine my actions and thoughts and offering a soul searching way to trust and truly follow Jesus. John Mark speaks truth in a world that doesn’t always walk the talk and calls us back to Jesus, all the while pointing out how we’re following the world too closely, and how we’ve fallen for the world’s lies and faithless version of Christianity. Like the OT prophets, John Mark calls us to turn back to Jesus and gives clear steps on how to do it. So thankful that this pastor is willing to speak truth.

    Not what I expected

John Mark makes a lot of good points but the book was heavy, a lot of the times I thought I was listening to a PhD manuscript, it was not conversational. I read the ruthless elimination of hurry and you felt like a easy conversation with the author, this was definitely not that, hard to follow and many times I lost focus and had to listen again. It was okay but not something I would recommend a friend.
