Description

Martin Chorley, aka the Faceless Man, wanted for multiple counts of murder, fraud and crimes against humanity, has been unmasked and is on the run.

Peter Grant, Detective Constable and apprentice wizard, now plays a key role in an unprecedented joint operation to bring Chorley to justice.

But even as the unwieldy might of the Metropolitan Police bears down on its foe, Peter uncovers clues that Chorley, far from being finished, is executing the final stages of a long-term plan.

A plan that has its roots in London's 2,000 bloody years of history and could literally bring the city to its knees.

To save his beloved city, Peter's going to need help from his former best friend and colleague - Lesley May - who brutally betrayed him and everything he thought she believed in. And, far worse, he might even have to come to terms with the malevolent supernatural killer and agent of chaos known as Mr Punch....

This is really it?

I love the series and as usual Kobna Holdbrook-Smith does an excellent job with the audio book. Molly has a reunion with a long missed friend, my favorite part of the book. But quite frankly I was disappointed with the story. Characters and fragments from the comic novels pop up randomly and it’s hard to keep track of who is who. Peter is at the same time taking immense risks to get near the Faceless One but then he’s seems to be struggling using some actual magic which made the series so special. And the epic resolution of the conflict which has developed of seven books? Not convincing, the Faceless One would have deserved to end like a proper Bond villain – truly smart and cunning with an evil motive you could understand. Here you could ask any reader of the book what Chorley actually wanted to achieve and you would end up with a lot of diffuse opinions, but nothing that made the immense effort he invested look appropriate. Bottom line: If you read the previous books, you probably want to get the conclusion. But I really hope the next Peter Grant book surprises me in a more positive way.

One of the best in the series. Kobna is amazing!

this is the first book in the series I listened to add an audiobook, and Kobna's performance makes me want to get the rest and restart from the beginning.

Another fantastic book. I loved it.

The ongoing struggle of Peter and Lesley and the team at the Folly continues. The story moves forward nicely with a good deal of resolution, but leaving room for the next installment. The narration is, as always, superb. The unique humour is as entertaining as always, although this was perhaps less humorous than some of the previous books. If you haven't read the previous books in the Rivers of London Series, you should not start here, but this is a spectacular series. To purloin a phrase "Do yourselves a favour" and read this stuff.

I'm getting worried

A while back Audible threw me a short freebie about a weird library. wasn't my kind of thing, but stuck in traffic , you know... And thus began my biggest addiction since Barry Eisler and his John Rain series. So for months now PC Grant has been my commuting companion and I only have a single title left. What the hell will light my drive up after this? After a fascinating journey of a kind I usually flag away (Harry Potter for grown-ups? Yeah, right) how is anything else going to stack up?

Excellent

As always, the Rivers of London crew delivers a cracking story. Loved this one as much as the previous, and can’t wait to listen to the next one.

Best Ever Writer/Narrator combination!

I love the Peter Grant series by Ben Aaronovitch narrated by the superb Kobna Holdbrook-Smith and this latest is no exception! I lived for 4 years in London (a long time ago now), and I wish I'd had these titles while I was there. I'd love to explore Peter Grant's London (even without the magic) while listening to Kobna's narration. Ben & him give an intimate and different perspective on that fabulous city.

The perfect marriage of fantasy and cop show

Having finally caught up with the series, it seems like time for a review. And catching up has been brilliant. Peter Grant is easily the most entertaining protagonist in his genre, Ben Aaronovitch injects sly humour from every angle, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is easily the top narrator I've experienced on Audible and the perfect choice for this series. Start at the beginning and I guarantee enjoyment all the way through if you're a fan of the genre.

Another good entry in this great series. Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is the man., and the character development is at its best.

Peter Grant and the Battle for London

A little warning to novices: if you are not familiar with at least four of the books from this series, you will be confused and not really enjoy this book. However if you are already a fan in the know you will love it because a lot of characters and events from the previous books (and the graphic novels too) get mentioned - additional flavour for true fans. And from Mr. Punch to fae and others from the demi-monde: Peter has to deal with them right in the historic heart of London and it is a real battle. The performance by Kobna Holbrook-Smith is flawless and fitting as always, so listening to this excellent book is pure joy. This book could almost be a grand finale, but (sigh of relief) do not fear there are developments that need to be continued in further books.

Great finish....

of a all in all brilliant book series. Funny, exciting and full of typical british humor. You need to know what went on before though, ( at least Book 4 to 6 ) otherwise you not going to understand all the hints and clues.

One weak point

It's all really good but the music between chapters is a bit distracting and annoying.

Another gripping sequel

The story concludes with happy endings but one lose end remains. A follow up to come? Well narrated and thoroughly enjoyed. At one point the story deviates from the plot and almost starts to ramble aimlessly which is quite unnecessary but once back on track all is forgiven.

Brings together some loose ends....

Kobna Holdbrook-Smith brings Peter Grant and all the other characters to live in his unique fantastic way! Couldn't image another voice being Peter's! Lies Sleeping brings together some loose ends with which one was left after the last (two) books. I just loved it how characters Nd storylines re-occur and one can dive deeper into the characters as well as the looong history of the city. Leslie's behaviour is still erratic and I didn't buy the motive presented is all that's driving her. so very excited how things will go forward with her. Personaly, I didn't like the end and am curious how things are going to evolve around Peter and Beverley....

The narrator is the perfect match for the story

I loved the rendition of the main character (and most others) by the narrator. And truly enjoyed the story, though I perhaps enjoy the characters in the story even more than the story itself.

Worthy conclusion to the saga.

Not just a quite satisfying conclusion to the preceeding books - giving us sufficient closure without tying everything off in too neat a bow - but as always masterfully narrated. Just listening to Holbrook-Smith is a pure joy.

A massive dive into London history

Peter Grant and Nightingale go head to head with Leslie and the Faceless Man - for real this time!
