Luise Elisabeth von Strauß und Torney wurde am 20. September 1873 in Bückeburg als Tochter des Königlich-Preußischen Generalmajors Lothar von Strauß und Torney (1835–1903) geboren. Mit 25 Jahren veröffentlichte sie erste Gedichte und fand Anschluss an den Göttinger Kreis um Börries von Münchhausen, in dem sie neben anderen die Schriftstellerin Agnes Miegel und Theodor Heuss kennenlernte, mit denen sie eine enge Freundschaft verband.
Die braune Libussa ritt aus des Burghofs Tor.
Sie summte und sang ihrer braunen Stute ins Ohr:
Viel sind der Straßen im Lande, eine gehst du.
Wlada, meine Blanke, meine Schlanke, trab zu.
