Description

Lana can't remember a time when she wasn't hopelessly in love with Akira. Even knowing that he viewed her as a kid sister had never helped to dampen her feelings. One night together only made it worse. After seducing Akira, it became apparent that their love affair was hopelessly one-sided, and heartbroken, Lana fled her beloved island paradise. Eight years later, Lana finally returns home, planning to stay briefly, and only for business, but her plans go quickly awry when she runs into the man she could never get over.

Robotic Narration, Thin Storyline.

What disappointed you about Lana: A Novella?

I really enjoyed reading the Mile High series by the same author. Lilley can write a decent story, peppered with the right amount of provocative erotic scenes.

This novella is not Lilley's best work. The story feels rushed, and yet has aspects that feel skimmed over.
It doesn't help that the narrator appears to be reading the story for the first time. Her inflection is completely off, and she reads the entire story in a very monotonous tone of voice. I don't believe that audio book narrators have to be proficient with accents or voices, but I do enjoy hearing emotion and life in a story...this was like listening to someone reading a school textbook for the first time.

What could R. K. Lilley have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The characters could have been fleshed out more - though then I imagine it couldn't have been called a novella.

How could the performance have been better?

A different narrator could make this a more enjoyable listen.
When I listen to a book through Audible, I expect a certain level of professionalism. I don't think the narrator has to "ham it up", but they need to sound as though they at least enjoy their job, and like reading books.

What character would you cut from Lana: A Novella?

None.

Snoozeable and Unlikeable

I thought the premise of this story would be great. However, the heroine/victim not only begged the man to take her back, she got into a fisticuffs over him with his ex. A fisticuff--at age 28??? Ridiculous. Unfortunately, I also slept part of the way through the book. Lana's issue was that the man she loved was not going to marry her so she leaves Maui to experience life. When she returns she is supposed to be a sophisticated person but she flashed the hero and plays with herself while he is watching. I only thought, what a way to debase one's self. The main conflict was that there was racism in her marrying a Hawaiian man-it was frowned upon for such a wealthy man to marry a white mainlander even though she was well loved by his family. I could I could only think--welcome to what the mainland is for all the other minorities. Horrible book--weak woman. I don't understand what he saw in her. I also understand why the family might not want him to marry such a weak person irregardless of race.

I WANTED IT TO BE SOOOO MUCH MORE....

Any additional comments?

I put off listening to this novella because the reviews were unimpressive. I finally went ahead and bought it and I'm sad to say I was quite unimpressed also. The story was rushed, skipping over details and rushing the ending. It left some things unanswered. The angst was not there like in most of her books. The narration was off also. It wasn't a good fit at all.

An Excellent companion to the Up In The Air series

Well worth it if you are a fan of the Up In The Air series. Fills in Lana’s back story & lost love very nicely. Not as hot as up in the air but very enjoyable & heat warming at the same time.

A roller coaster of emotions

I loved Lana from her mentions in the Up in the Air series. Such a great feel good story that takes you along the roller coaster with her as James’s briefly mentioned scheme unfolds. Loved it.

Sweet Lana!

I'm glad I found this novella to fill in the missing pieces of Lana and Akira's story. I was very curious after reading Up in the Air and Tristan and Danika. This couple was adorable. I was a bit frustrated by things left unsaid that could have saved everyone a lot of heartache, but I guess that is frustrating human nature after so many years and so many assumptions. This narrator was new to me. There were some awkward pauses and caused the story to not flow for me as well as it could have, but her voice is pleasant and the story was very sweet. Akira was sufficiently hot to have earned all the build up and Lana's long-distance devotion.

Bad Narration

This narrator was awful. After listening to the rest of this wonderful series, I was very disappointed.

Really quick paced, but good

Wow, that was short and to the point. It was nice to see how Lana and Akira got together after hearing about her in the Up in the Air series.

It was...eh...

The writing itself is juvenile. The story line drags and some of the interactions between characters is pretty humdrum. I finished it because I have to but at no point did it pick up. I wouldn’t recommend it.
