    Description

I’m rather used to the crazy cases, because let’s face it, most cops can handle the run-of-the-mill with their eyes closed. I’m only called in when the situation is weird or they need to solve the case fast.

This case is a little of both.

Someone’s attacking women as they get off of work, hitting them in the back of the head. What started as a case of battery has steadily built up to homicide. With three murders, six victims, and no leads, the Clarksville PD is desperate to catch the assailant. But there’s no real leads for us to follow, either, and for once my eyes can’t really help.

A madman running around attacking women is bad enough, but the police are demanding answers we can’t give them, and they’re not taking no for an answer. It’s pushing us all past our limits, and frankly, I don’t know what’s going to break first: the case or Donovan’s patience.

Crazy good and a lot of fun!

A few months ago I listened to the first book in this series and I fell head over heels for these characters and the world AJ Sherwood created and couldn’t wait to spend more time in it. I was soo happy when this book was released.

Again, the title of the book is quirky – and kind of fitting to Jon in a way, and it definitely fits the case. And while it is a new case I still urge you to start from book one to really get to know the world and characters to get to know them and their backstory, and some subtle – and not so subtle hints. Jon and Donovan have come far, and still have ways to go. They are a great match for each other, and while it at times can feel very one sided it’s clear that they both are what the other needs. Their relationship doesn’t get much page time in this book, it kind of took a backseat to the case. I feel the story as a whole wasn’t as strong as book one. Parts of it were resolved too quickly and easily and I wished they were more fleshed out. But you know what? I had a great time anyway!

So… elephant in the room…. This book has, due to tragic circumstances a different narrator from the first book. Lloyd Thomas is a new narrator for me and also to the field it seems. This is usually a bit of a gamble, and starting in the middle of a series will never be easy – especially considering the large shoes he had to fill. This gamble though, paid off – big time. You can’t tell he only has a few books in his repertoire. He narrates with a surety of someone well versed in the field and he hits so many of my high points; he differentiates between characters, has great pacing, adds that little extra with sound effects for phone calls, he also narrates with passion and really connects with the characters and makes the listeners connect with them as well.

The book is narrated from both Jon and Donovan’s POV and I really loved how Thomas did that. Most narrators narrate a book in their regular voice, only modifying it for dialogues to keep track of who says what. That’s not the case here. Everything told from Donovan’s POV is told in Donovan’s deeper voice, descriptions, monologues and what not. I find that I really enjoyed it. It’s something simple that so clearly shows us who the listener is following, connecting us to the characters and the story that much more. With this book Thomas clearly shows what he’s capable off and I can’t wait to listen to more of his productions in the future, because I hope there will be many more.

A copy of this book was generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review for Loev Bytes.

    Great second in this series

    Good story with surprise ending.
Really appreciated this narrator; he did an excellent job and Jon’s depiction is one of a truly adult man.
    Well worth it.

I like Jon and Donovan so much

I love these characters and I love the story. I have mixed feelings about the narrator but I found it hard nor to compare him to Kenneth Obi who narrated the first book. I miss the deep rumble that Kenneth did for Donovan. This narrator gives the same voice to every character. It’s hard sometimes to tell Jon and Donovan apart, and while I can say that this narrator did a much more natural sounding southern accent than Kenneth did, not all the characters are meant to have southern accents. I do very much like the way this narrator changes the voice when the voice is being heard through the phone.

    Amazing Monsters!

I love the new audiobook narrator! He did such a phenomenal job on the story. Finding out how the monsters worked and who was involved in the murder and why...fabulous! I just love this series and am already listening to more. Would highly recommend.

    Great style

I love the interaction between Jon and Donovan. I like the modern speech, the colloquialisms, the TV references. it was cute, light, funny. The 2 books I've read so far have also had some great teeth in the LGBTQ suspense genre. The cases were good. Different than a standard mystery. more like an episode of Criminal Minds. I like that. Also the hotness was great. Its not a sex novel. The amount of coda is perfect for the characters. we learn about them, what makes them tick, their family, their history, their conversations, not every roll in the sheets. I love the series so far.

    Short, fun, but not comical

The zippy title matches Jon’s personality, but misleads a bit on the tone of this series. You won’t find Stephanie Plum level hilarity or Carl Hiaasen level crazy, but you will find a fast paced, psychic cop procedural with a great MM couple in Jon and Donovan, and a little fun and lovin’ on the romance side. This second book is a bit shallow on the police side, with little actual policing other than Jon using his psychic skills to find the bad guy. A few more chapters putting twists and turns, and police work, would have been nice. While the mystery flew along, I did love the reveal at the end- very original.

This book also leans harder on the romance end, adding another potential LGBTQ couple and feeling a little too sex-on-the-brain as Jon and Donovan are in the honeymoon phase (this story is four months after the HEA is the first book). There’s only two actual scenes, at 2 and 5 hrs (ch17), but quite a bit of frisky talk and handsy-hanky-panky. Still sweet and fun, although I feel like the author is working too hard to fit every variety of LGBTQ person into this small Tennessee town- it didn’t feel as organic as the first story. (also, she really likes to use the anatomical “perineum” a lot during the nooky… which to me is like referring to the vulva when writing MF scenes…kind of a mood killer)

For me, the new narrator is a step down from book 1, in large part because Jon and Donovan often sound exactly the same and it makes for confusing scenes while I try to figure out who’s talking. Book 1 has a higher voiced, accented Jon to match his more lithe, swimmer’s frame and snarky quips, and Donovan has a very deep, growly voice, but Mr. Thomas often forgets Jon’s accent and narrates both at the same pitch. This is particularly odd to me because Mr. Thomas is clearly capable of unique male voicing, like with new character Garret and recurring character Cho. Still, for a $7 book, this was a decent listen. Book 3, bought on sale, is also recommended.

    Really Great.

I'm loving this series, the characters are so sweet and real. They have real life problems and work them out, without any magical fix it all. It's my first time listening to this narrator and I believe he did an excellent job, all of the little details, like with the phone calls, took it to the next level.

Even better than the first part

In a way, I liked this part even better than the first part, because this goes more into the background of the characters and allows us to see more of Jon's abilities, as well as the consequences of them. I think what makes this so attractive to me is the way it alludes to him working all sorts of other cases, and I really enjoy detective stories with lots of random mysteries. I think I would really enjoy more of this where we get to see them solve several smaller cases while working on a big one, sort of like the beginning of the first part, but more of them handling more than one thing at a time. This was a lot of fun already, though, I really enjoyed listening. I love that we get to see more of Donovan being the hero, and Jon being generally loved be everyone. I also really like that I loved the villain in this. While he did do bad things, the more we actually learned about him, the less villain-y he became. I really, really love that in the end, he was more of an adorable hero in his own tragic fantasy life than anyone wishing harm on anyone else. That was unexpected but very much appreciated. While I do feel sorry for his victims; what happened to them was a tragedy - I still really liked him.
Thank you so much for writing this, AJ Sherwood, and thanks to everyone who made it into an audiobook I can listen to. This is very much appreciated.
