    Description

Jean-Paul Sartre, a French philosopher, is perhaps the best known advocate of existentialism. In this view, no external authority gives life meaning: mankind is radically free and responsible. In every moment we choose ourselves, with no assurance that we have a continuing identity or power. We set up determinisms to ease our minds, but in the face of the finality of death, only through our present consciousness do we establish our own authentic existence. Sartre's existentialism faces the evil in human existence and sees that humans are responsible for it.

The Giants of Philosophy is a series of dramatic presentations, in understandable language, of the concerns, questions, interests, and overall world view of history's greatest philosophers. Special emphasis on clear and relevant explanations gives you a new arsenal of insights toward living a better life.

    Narration is unbearable

I couldn’t get through more than 30 minutes of this because of the comical, very annoying French accent of the narrator. It was on par with Pepe le pew.

So far the best non-Starte explanation of Sartre.

I listened to "The Great Minds of the Wester Intellectual Tradition" by The Great Courses. I was intrigued by many of the minds, including Sartre.

I listened to TGC lectures on Existentialism but found them too academic. I listened to some YouTube lectures too. But I always felt a distance between the implications of what he was trying to say and what I was being taught.

This felt like I was giving Sartre a fair listen. I finally "got" what he meant by "Being in itself", Being for others" and especially "Bad Faith". I can USE this. I can agree and disagree. I can incorporate it into my model of reality. Not just talk about Sartre, which I don't care about.

This philosophy has profound implications about how to live, should you really want to hear them.

If I were starting over, learning about Sartre, I'd start here.

succinct review of life of Sartre's existentialism

I am new to the philosophy of existentialism and thereby don't claim expertise. The book reviews not just the original point of view of Sartre's existentialism but also the evolution, which I particularly liked. Because it provides context to the ideas being presented and shows how Sartre's wasn't set in his views and allowed for the nuance it's place when it demanded, as well as the ability to self critique. I look forward to reading his work and get into the details and nitty gritty. Those are my two cents.

    Great intro to Sartre

This was one of my favorite audio series when I was a philosophy student in college. It's narrated by Charleston Heston, who you may know from his starring roll in Planet of the Apes. He has a wonderful voice and brings the basic pillars of each philosophy to life.

The great Greek philosophers would not be impresse

Jean-Paul Sartre philosophical thought as a whole is the ramblings of an idiot. Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Etc would not be impressed.

The parodic french accent was distracting

Every time Sartre is quoted an over the top ”french” accent is used that sounds like the french knights from Monty Python and the holy grail.

It is very distracting and detracts from the message.

The format in written form is a compact overview over Sartres ideas. Good for a first introduction if you can stand the narration

    Contents good, Heston good

Excellent condensation of the views of Sarte. Excellent performance by Heston. The introduction of another voice to represent Sarte speaking weaken the performance. The French accent added nothing and was mildly distracting

    The gist it Sartre.

Sums up his thought and gives some of his background. Not the detailed version of Sartre, but a clear understanding of his views.
