Description

Can learning another language be as easy as speaking your own? Yes - with Pimsleur it’s that easy. Learn on your own time, at your own pace, and wherever you choose. Japanese Phase 1, Units 21-25 build on material taught in prior units. Each lesson provides 30 minutes of spoken language practice, with an introductory conversation, and new vocabulary and structures. Detailed instructions enable you to understand and participate in the conversation. Each lesson contains practice for vocabulary introduced in previous lessons. The emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension, and on learning to speak Japanese.

Critiques

"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." ( AudioFile magazine)

It Works!

Contrary to what one might expect, Japanese in many ways is not difficult: there are basically no verb conjugations, no plurals and no gender markers.

Of course, the vocabulary is completely different. Even words borrowed from English are transformed, for instance « depato » for department store or « kombini » for convenience store.

The Pimsleur method is strictly oral and is based on interaction and repetition.

It works wonderfully well to acquire the fundamentals of the Japanese language and is warmly recommended.

Good but...

For the first time in my life I am learning a language and remembering the vocab. But... it's only because some kind person wrote a transcript I could download off the net to refer to. Unbelievably, this adult learning program does not include any notes and without them, as a strongly visual learner, this course would have be worthless. I have to constantly stop the audio to look up words as I have no idea what is being said from the different pronunciation from the 2 speakers.
