Description

It happened at the Ball….

Where beautiful but bold Lillian Bowman quickly learned that her independent American ways weren’t entirely “the thing.” And the most disapproving of all was insufferable, snobbish, and impossible Marcus, Lord Westcliff, London’s most eligible aristocrat.

It happened in the garden…

When Marcus shockingly – and dangerously – swept her into his arms. Lillian was overcome with a consuming passion for a man she didn’t even like. Time stood still; it was as if no one else existed…thank goodness they weren’t caught very nearly in the act!

It happened one autumn.…

Marcus was a man in charge of his own emotions, a bedrock of stability. But with Lillian, every touch was exquisite torture, every kiss an enticement for more. Yet how could he consider taking a woman so blatantly unsuitable…as his bride?

Great Second Book in the Wallflower Series

This book is even better than book one "Secrets of a Summer Night." It has romance, mystery, intrigue, and some whit. If you like historical romances you will love this one. Wonderful book.

Did not like main female charactor's voice

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I was irritated by the way Ms. Landor portrayed the voice of the main female character. It made me hate the main character by the end of the book. I realize she was to be outspoken, but it came across as arrogant. Also it took me half the book to get used to her male voices.

All in all the story was ok, I will read the series in book form and skip this narrator.

Yay for the wallflowers

Love this book in audio and just as much in print. The wallflowers series is such a breath of fresh air for historical romance. The characters are lively and different and don't let the normal restrictions stop them from having a wonderful time.

Lillian and Marcus are easily my favourite couple of the series. They are completely different and manage to find love in each other that makes me sigh every time.

A wonderful romance novel.

Second only to Devil in Winter.

I read Devil in Winter first, then the first two books in the series. I have to say I'm really glad I did that way, it made the fight between Lord Westcliff and St. Vincent even more hilarious. I could not stop laughing, seriously.

Lovely

Any additional comments?

Lillian's character is wonderful. Love strong women and she is certainly strong. Marcus is strong, rich and willful as well. A strong hate/dislike relationship changes to a passionate one. As expected from Lisa Kleypas, she ends this book with an incident that proves to both leading characters they love one another with much passion. This discovery then leads to an admission of love which Lisa K's characters often find difficult to do until the very end. It was time well spent.

One of my favorites in the series (Book 2)

While I don't enjoy all of Kleypas' books, I find her Wallflower Series pretty good. Books 2 and 3 are my favorites. If you have read Book 1, you had to know that the H/h in Book 2 were going to get together - they've been chomping at the bit to fight with each other since they met. Both strong personalities end up being tempered (only slightly - no one becomes a wuss) by their love for each other. The h does come across as rather immature because of some of her behavior, but if you have ever known someone who brings out the worst in you (in that you desire to do the opposite of what they tell you), then you'll understand her motivation. I find the H extremely likeable as he is both very strong-willed, but very intelligent and honorable as well. There's thought and planning behind his demands.

I'm not really a fan of this narrator, though. She kind of made me dislike the heroine at first, and made the hero sound overly stuffy.

On my Top five Historical Romance list....

I have spent every available minute of the past three days listening to this story and inLOVED it!!! It was much better than the first book in the Walflower series. Lillian Bowman is an untamed American heiress looking for a husband. Marcus Westcliff is a British aristocrat who seems to be uptight and conservative. They really know how to get under each other's skin and push every button. But all the fighting was masking a very powerful passion.

This book is very funny, romantic, with red hot passion and very unexpected situations happening. I don't like to give spoilers but what happens towards the end was a big surprise and gave a lot of curiosity to see how the hero of the next book could possibly be redeemed.

Narration: Rosalyn Landor did an excellent job narrating this book. Very good accents and I could easily distinguish each character. She added so much feeling and intensity to an already good storyline. This audiobook is a must listen!!!

Even better than the first!

Excellent sequel to "Secrets of a Summer Night." The story of Lillian and Marcus is fantastic! I can hardly wait until the audio versions of the next two books are released. As always, Rosalyn Landor does a phenomenal job with the narration. If you like historical romance, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!

Wonderful wallflower

Setting: Hampshire, England 1841
Genre: Romance
Lillian Bowman is beautiful, rich, and American. She and her sister Daisy are in England to land a Lord, as many nouveau riche women were wont to do during the era. Many noblemen were land-rich but cash-poor, so American girls with their hefty dowries were attractive. Hey, it worked for Winston Churchill’s parents. Unfortunately for Lillian, money can’t buy the entrée into Society she and Daisy need in order to meet all the right men. They need a sponsor. After Marcus, the 9th Earl of Westcliff, impulsively kisses her, Lillian tells him she’ll keep quiet about it if he can talk his mother into giving her and Daisy pointers on how to behave in society and then sponsor them. Over the course of the house party Lillian and Westcliff find themselves thrown together and unable to keep their hands to themselves. One thing leads to another... but the evil Countess, who disapproves of the Americans, has plans to make mischief.
This is a very well written story. The characters are 3-dimensional, the plot interesting, with quite the exciting climax and sweet denouement (as well as an introductory scene to the next installment of the series), and the dialogue is witty. I laughed often at the repartee between Lillian and other characters (especially Westcliff). I liked these protagonists better than the ones from the first book (Annabelle & Simon in Secrets of a Summer Night). In fact, I like all the characters in that were introduced in the first book better in this one. However, Lillian does come across as strident and bold-as-brass, and Westcliff starts out as a sanctimonious prig. While Lillian doesn’t soften all that much, Westcliff does grow over the course of the book, becoming more self-aware. The villain of the piece (besides Countess B*tch) is the exceedingly handsome, charming, and shallow Sebastian, Lord St. Vincent. He is shown in a very poor light, which makes his featuring in the 3rd book of the series a bit of a challenge for Ms Kleypas.
The narration of the audiobook is excellent. Not only does Rosalyn Landor provide voices for a variety of characters (different genders, nationalities, classes), but she maintains consistency across the series. She is my favorite author in this genre, and in the top 5 overall.
