Description

It's Dan Calebow's worst nightmare: Phoebe Somerville, a trendy New York knockout, inherits the Chicago Stars, the football team he coaches. And she wants to help him run it. Phoebe's sure he needs her. He's a sexist good-ol'-boy jock with a one-track mind. Surely she can straighten him out....So why should each find the other attractive? Call it the competitive urge, but these two stubborn people play the game for keeps.

Classic Susan Elizabeth Philips

What I love about Susan Elizabeth Phillips is that you are guaranteed a story that is charming, funny and sexy. She has a great way of making the reader feel like they are in the story. This book was entertaining and great to listen to. This book is the first in the "Chicago Stars" series. I listened to them out of order but each story can stand on its own. It was good however, to where it all started. Phoebe is such full of life yet lacks confidence due to her bad history with men. I think many women can relate in one way or another with her story. This was a heartwarming enchanting story and I would list it as one of my favorites by this author.

One of SEP' top two books ever!

I have listened to this book a number of times, and it never disappoints. I adore the main characters, and this is a fantastic start to Phillips Chicago Stars series. I hope she continues it!

It was so fun to be in this book.

I’ve read the paperback three times and recently listened to the audiobook. I laughed a lot the first time I read it. I didn’t laugh as much in subsequent reads because I knew what to expect, but I still loved it.

Phoebe’s mother died early and her father didn’t love her. He kept her away in boarding schools and camps. She was raped, but her father didn’t believe her. She creates a false front, looking and acting like a Marilyn Monroe-Mae West-blond-bombshell-bimbo. She’s afraid of sex, but she talks as if she has many lovers. She appears silly and not smart, but underneath she is very smart. Because of this false front her dialogue does not fit her inner motivations. But it’s believable because her false front is her protection. And it provides good dialogue and conflict.

There are no details about the rape. It consists of Phoebe telling her father afterwards that she has been raped. Some readers avoid books with rape scenes. I think this might be mild enough not to bother them.

Dan was a football star and is now head coach of a pro football team. Dan and Phoebe conflicts are entertaining. And Dan’s intense desire for Phoebe melts me. There’s some really cool passion.

SEMI-SPOILER ABOUT DAN’S MOTIVATIONS:
Dan’s had sex with lots of women, but he no longer wants that. He’s looking for a wife who likes domestic activities and children. He starts dating a kindergarten teacher thinking she fits. But then he finds himself drawn to Phoebe. He can’t resist his lust for her. Yet he tries to resist as the honorable thing to do since he doesn’t view Phoebe as marriage material.
END SPOILER.

AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR:
Anna Fields did a great job with male and female voices.

Romance & Football - Somehow it works...

The plot is predictable, but the narration is excellent (Anna Field never disappoints) and the romance is quite...um, effective. A fun, frolicking story about a dysfunctional family, an evil cousin, a woman battling childhood abuse to come into her own in the middle of the most unlikely environment: the locker room of a football team fighting their way to the Superbowl. The romance is well written and well read. Not high literary material, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Refreshingly Different...

Even though it was written over a decade ago, this is still a refreshingly different kind of romance novel. Phoebe is unlike any heroine I've read about before or since and she taught me a lot about how we categorize people based on very limited information. Kudos to Susan Elizabeth Phillips for creating a character and a situation that was so wholly unexpected and a lot of fun to read.

Listened to it in ONE take!

I finished this book in ONE take! This will tell you how much amazing that book is. It has all the elements of an excellent romance novel that I am used to from SEP and Anna Fields. Interesting story, attractive characters, and well written plot and dialogue.
I LOVED this book. It is one of the rare books that you listen yet you are dreading that it will end :(
Enjoy the listen contemporary romance fans :)

Change of heart

Would you consider the audio edition of It Had to Be You to be better than the print version?

Didn't read the print version, loved the audio version

What was one of the most memorable moments of It Had to Be You?

When Phoebe was mistaken for Dan's ex-wife at the beginning of an intimate fantasy.

Which character – as performed by Anna Fields – was your favorite?

Phoebe

If you could take any character from It Had to Be You out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Phoebe, because she has a depth that most people wouldn't take the time to get to know. Once again , the outer package doesn't match the person's heart.

Any additional comments?

As with many audio books, the narrator makes the difference between a good listen and a poor one. Ms. Fields was one of the best in the business and her loss is greatly mourned. With this series of books ( and I would recommend these to everyone) you might start out disliking the male character as a sexist idiot, but in the end , you grow to love the man they become. I have listened to this series several times and will listen to it again and again.

Don't judge a book by the cover.

I like the writing, the characters are vivid and real, but with all that I almost turned it off because of some sex scenes. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed this book and am glad I stuck it out, but the fact that the hero was very rough with the heroine (he thought she wanted it because of his ex-wife) was messed up. The heroine had a huge hang up with a rape that happened when she was a kid and then even after all that happened between them she still went back to him for more. Lucky for her he really wasn't that type of guy otherwise she would have been in a world of hurt. I would have told him to F off, but then there wouldn't have been a story. After all that major miscommunication was out of the way I started enjoying the book. There was some laugh out loud parts but the story is not a humorous kind, more a trump of life. In the end it all works out and I will continue with the series. Narrator was good.

Awesome Listen!

This was the first SEP book I listened to. The book was hilarious and her characters are all so great. I have since downloaded most of her Chicago Stars books (all but 1 - havent gotten around to it yet). I love the narrator and all her voices. The stories are engaging and funny and full of love. I've read 2 of her books and listened to most of them...they're all lighthearted and a great way to pass time whether youre driving in traffic, doing chores, or working out. It will definitely keep you smiling and sometimes have you bursting out laughing. It doesnt get dull, and sometimes you feel that familiar tug on your heart strings that we readers/listeners of romance or chick lit novels love! I recommend you download the books in order. This is the first book of her Chicago Stars series. They dont need to be read/heard in order, but its more fun that way since she introduces the characters that she uses in her next book in the one prior to it. The next book is titled Heaven Texas in case anyone is wondering.

Wonderful, delightful, chuckle out loud

Loved this book from the very beginning. Shortly after "meeting" Dan Calebow, I never could seem to get the picture of Matthew Mcconnaughey out of my mind, so there he stayed, as Dan, for the entire time I listened to Anna Fields' excellent narration. It was a fun romp (and there were several descriptive "romps") and, as usual, great character development.
