A fascinating listen

A fascinating study, made all the more interesting by Rose Caraway's wonderful narration.

The books description describes it as the "foundational scholarly work explaining the motivations and experiences of wives who sleep with other men." I don't think I would go that far, but then again there hasn't (to my knowledge) been a great deal of non-fiction written on the subject. Perhaps due to the dearth of previous work, much of the book seems to have been researched on the internet in 2008 and 2009. The audio version includes a pdf of the footnote citations. I thought that some of the best parts of the book were the "interludes" provided by the author interspaced between the chapters. They provided first person interviews and anecdotes conducted between the author and the subjects. Many of those were fascinating, others frankly a bit depressing. There are all sorts of motivations for persons to embark on this lifestyle, and plenty of obstacles placed in front of it by society and other mores.

With that said, on the whole, it made for a fine listen, with my interest being held even though the drier parts by the narrator's skill and delivery. Maybe it's just me, but I would swear that Rose Caraway could make even a reading of the telephone book sound sexy!

Gloriously Adapted for Audio

Dr. Ley’s work nicely contrasts with other similar, well received anthropological studies on female sexuality, and has fueled great discussions amongst our friends. In addition, I’ve been a fan of Rose Caraway’s work for years now, and hearing her illuminate Dr. Ley’s work is a real treat.

I saw a lot of my wife in this book. it explains a lot. Don't think this is completely for me, but it taught me a lot about why her interest in have changed...if they were ever there at all.

Very helpful

Rose caraway does an amazing job narrating this book. Her voice is so soft and sensual, it really adds to the books subject. This book answered a lot of questions that I’ve had about my marriage as well as marriages around me, and also helped me to understand why a wife would stray outside the marriage, there is plenty of history in this book, if your history buff, and also how different cultures view this topic, this book is very clinical and really informative. If you have had infidelity in your marriage, this will really explain how and why it happened, and give you a better understanding of your partner

Challenge your marriage

In all and honestly review. The challenge is twofold: convincing your wife/husband to do it. Second, hope she/he won’t fall in love with the new lover—unless there is an air of marriage termination.

So comprehensive

This is the first book in this subject field that was honest and comprehensive. I was afraid this would be full of platitudes and word salads but instead, it was full of information that is true ans usable on every page.

Plenty of information about open relationships.

It was a study of open relationships, both historical and geographical. It wasn't what I thought it would be but very interesting none the less.

Missed big questions

The books seems to suggest, infidelity is widespread and possibly motivated by selection pressures, if true then family trees should be unreliable, this should cause downstream problems for the biomedical field which relies on this data, big questions like this are ignored in favor of a conversation about personal responsibility and relationship dynamics. I would have enjoyed the book more if it included a deeper dive into the outcomes of it’s claims.

Eye opening

This is a wonderful book. With very valuable insight. I have experienced many of the things in this book and our marriage is stronger for not having to be bound by traditional ideals.
