Description
A Washington Post and Amazon Charts bestseller.
Honesty is the best policy...except maybe when it comes to marriage in this brilliant novel about the high price of perfection from bestselling author Camille Pagán.
Wife. Mother. Breadwinner. Penelope Ruiz-Kar is doing it all - and barely keeping it together. Meanwhile, her best friend, Jenny Sweet, appears to be sailing through life. As close as the two women are, Jenny’s passionate marriage, pristine house, and ultra-polite child stand in stark contrast to Penelope’s underemployed husband, Sanjay, their unruly brood, and the daily grind she calls a career.
Then a shocking tragedy reveals that Jenny’s life is far from perfect. Reeling, Penelope vows to stop keeping the peace and finally deal with the issues in her relationship. So she and Sanjay agree to a radical proposal: both will write a list of changes they want each other to make - then commit to complete and total honesty.
What seems like a smart idea quickly spirals out of control, revealing new rifts and even deeper secrets. As Penelope stares down the possible implosion of her marriage, she must ask herself: When it comes to love, is honesty really the best policy?
Commentaires
“A poignant novel that explores truthfulness and boundaries in friendship, marriage, and more. With relatable characters and a realistic plot, this character-driven novel will have readers wondering if honesty really is the best policy.” --Booklist
“A tale of friendship, this novel offers insight into the complexities of women’s lives and how one woman learns to deal with it through the pain of loss and heartache and come out on top.” --New York Journal of Books
“Camille Pagán’s novels are compulsively readable, and her latest may just be her ultimate page-turner. Smart, witty, and exacting, I’m Fine and Neither Are You examines the high price of perfection and the rewards of getting real - even when doing so jeopardizes your most important relationships. I loved it.” --Sarah Jio, New York Times bestselling author

The most self-involved protagonist ever
I wondered why I felt nothing for the characters in this story when such awful things were happening to them...their lives were a mess. Eventually I realized it was because they were awful people, led by their victim in chief, the main character, who was no doubt not fine because she did nothing but wallow in self-pity and lecture others with legitimate problems daily. That she felt vindicated in doing so made her even less pleasant. Avoid her and her holier than thou attitude and find a better book.

A Sad but Meaningful Story
While I found this story to be a bit sadder than I had bargained for, overall I enjoyed it. I think there was a lot of heart to it and while difficult to read, it dealt with compelling and eye-opening topics.
I wish that the protagonist had led with a bit more empathy, at least by the end of the novel. Honesty often came at the expense of her friends and families' feelings which became difficult to read as the story went on.
Amy McFadden did a wonderful job performing this story. She does such a fantastic job of conveying the characters' emotions and nuances. She's quickly becoming one of my favorite narrators!

Boring, pointless, and painful to listen to
Well, that’s 8 hours I’ll never get back. What a complete waste of time. This book is absolutely pointless with no likable characters or plot. The entire book is an overly self-involved, self-righteous woman complaining about her incredibly privileged life and first world problems. There is no substance to the book at all. The narrator talks like a brain dead valley girl. I finished it just because I can’t leave a book unfinished, but the ending was just as fruitless as everything else about the book.

Repetitive - did not like the narrator
The storyline became quite repetitive after a while. This book probably could’ve been shortened by half and the message still would’ve come across well. Did not like the narration - ugh every time she mimicked a children’s voice or said “she SAID” “he SAID” “I SAID”... like nails on a chalkboard

Engaging from the beginning. Fresh and actual.
Highly recommend for listening in the car or while cooking... Not necessary to pay attention to every single word to continue the story

Entitled
I can’t handle the entitlement of the narrator. The audible voice makes this worse. Whiny. Spoiled American. My book club had good discussion on this, but she bugged me the whole time. Ending was cliche and hallmark.

Good book, not a fan of the narration
As soon as the narration started my heart sank. I recognized the voice of the narrator as one that had dampened a listening experience previously. The pronunciation of some words is baffling and I can't tell if it's accent related or personal cadence. Words with the "eh" sound all come out sounding like "aaah". Said becomes Saaahd for example, and it drives me crazy. It's hard to focus on the content with the irritating pronunciation. The book itself, however, was well-written and enjoyable.

It was so-so..
I think the idea of the storyline was great. It didn't have too many moments within it though that kept me "on the edge of my seat" interested. I mean, it was good. But, not superb by any means. Also, I really didn't care for the narrator - but that's personal preference really.

Not for me
I honestly tried to finish this book. I tried to like this book but three quarters of the way through, I followed her advice, was honest and realized I didn't like any of these characters.
