Description

Cookie Chanel has a passion for fashion - and a murder mystery to solve!

Cookie Chanel has opened her own vintage clothing boutique, It's Vintage, Y'all, in the charming town of Sugar Creek, Georgia. Always on the lookout for stylish second-hand steals, she attends the estate sale of deceased socialite Charlotte Meadows. But she gets a lot more than she bargained for when Charlotte's ghost appears before her - offering fashion advice and begging Cookie to find out who murdered her. As the persistent poltergeist tags along and a possibly psychic pussycat moves into the shop, Cookie sorts through racks of suspects to see who may be hiding some skeletons in the closet. Do a clothing store owner and a disembodied socialite have a ghost of a chance of collaring a killer - or will Cookie's life be the next one hanging by a thread?

wrong narrator makes this difficult to listen to

This is a fun idea for a light, chic-lit novel. It has a lot of the right ingredients to be a charming, undemanding read. I love the aspect of the vintage clothes, which is why I bought the book. The fantasy of a vintage clothing shop and an almost instantly successful internationally read blog is enticing-unrealistic enough to be clearly fiction but delightful enough to be engrossing. The characters are the same in that they are unrealistic but delightful and charming. The problem is the reader. I feel bad about saying this, because she has a pleasant voice, knows her material and reads with enthusiasm. However, all the characters in the book are from the deep south, the book is set in the deep south, and the book is written in what I can only describe as a southern frame of mind and pattern of thought and speech. It was critical to it's success as an audio book that the reader be able to communicate that successfully. Had they chosen Peggity Price, for example, as the reader, I think I would have really enjoyed it, but this reader just wasn't up to the task. Thus, a lot of the humor is lost, and the story just doesn't flow like it should. I wasn't able to finish it because I found the interpretation so annoying. This won't bother everyone, of course, but for me it's a fatal flaw to what might have been a charming audiobook.

Cute lightheaded listen!

I loved the narration of Charlotte, I felt like I could close my eyes & see her & all her sass. The story is charming and cute, easy to follow. An all around cozy read. Grab a warm cup of coffee & curl up with this one!

unfriendly and unlikable protagonist ruins book

What did you like best about If You've Got It, Haunt It? What did you like least?

The story had a naive charm and a quiet country atmosphere which, coupled with the sprinkling of fashion references and tips, makes for a fun setting for a lighthearted murder mystery.

What was most disappointing about Rose Pressey’s story?

The main character is surprisingly angry, antagonistic and unlikable. She immediately take a dislike to the ghost, who is friendly and keen to not only solve her own murder but help the protagonist with her business and love life. This ruins the story, especially when the main character's sheer inability to follow up train of thought comes into play too (she thinks a ghost, who can't touch anything, may lock her in a closet!).

Which scene was your favorite?

Any scene with Wind Song, the cat who uses tarot cards.

Did If You've Got It, Haunt It inspire you to do anything?

Never to read another book in this series, unfortunately

Any additional comments?

I simply cannot recommend this book to anyone. The unlikable main character simply ruins the entire book.

Slow

What disappointed you about If You've Got It, Haunt It?

The two most common items in the book are detailed clothing descriptions and "she said". The editor could have cleaned this one up significantly, but did not.

Good. Concept, Poorly Written

Fun idea for a mystery, but shoddy writing - might be suitable for bored 12 year old girls...

Didn't work for me

Though I like the cozy genre and the writing was lively, the story didn't work for me.

The set up is the classic cozy "reluctant detective" who is the only one who can see an equally reluctant ghost who insists her murderer be found. Great set up. But huge, gaping logic holes quickly emerged when the ghost, who was invisible after all, didn't go and get information that could be useful to said investitagion. For example, at one point, they are being tailed by a dark car. Who could it be? We don't know. Too bad one of us isn't an invisible ghost who could pop back into the car following us and see who's driving... wait...

Light and fluffy

Would you try another book from Rose Pressey and/or Tara Ochs?

I probably wouldn't seek her out unless her book was on sale. Tara did a good job.

Would you recommend If You've Got It, Haunt It to your friends? Why or why not?

I like some light reading but they are mostly interested in "good literature".

What three words best describe Tara Ochs’s voice?

She was good.

Did If You've Got It, Haunt It inspire you to do anything?

No.

Any additional comments?

It was diverting.

Cute.

Wasn't bad, wasn't the best but certainly worth the time. Sucked me in and was a quick listen. I am not into fashion, but it was still cute.
