(P)2020 TantorAbout 90% of the book is exposition… and then other 10% you might ask? A dumpster fire of an ending. There is why too much filler and fluff and the characters are excruciatingly annoying, clueless, shallow, and flat out weird. Just one example of this: the main character wears a tiara for all of high school because she wants to be “different”???? There is absolutely no plot. The whole book (up until the last 2 chapters) is a boring description of a teenage girl just existing… nothing interesting or with any depth happens. Her friends are shallow, her boyfriend is shallow (and extremely misogynistic). Even the will they won’t they relationship with her childhood friend is never really developed or does it ever really appear until the last couple of chapters.
As for the writing and the performance? I don’t know how any person on the history of the earth that has ever read any other book could say this book was beautiful. At best it was bearable. The performance? HA! What performance! This narrator is about as mundane sounding as the book. I’m surprised I didn’t fall asleep.
I would say that this really is a young adult novel and should be read only by teen readers, but I would never recommend this book to anyone. I would even caution teen readers who want to read this book, as the book has questionable messages; such as romanticizing suicide and mental illness while portraying therapy and seeking help in an unrealistic and down right false way. Let’s just say as someone who has suffered from mental illness and has seen countless trained professionals and psychologist, the way that they portray the therapy scenes in this book is appalling and would dissuade any teen struggling with mental health from seeking help.
In conclusion, do not waste your time and money like I did reading/listening to this book.
