Honey Girl is an emotional, heartfelt, charming debut, and I loved every moment of it.” (Jasmine Guillory, New York Times best-selling author of The Proposal)

When becoming an adult means learning to love yourself first.

With her newly completed PhD in astronomy in hand, 28-year-old Grace Porter goes on a girls’ trip to Vegas to celebrate. She’s a straight-A, work-through-the-summer certified high achiever. She is not the kind of person who goes to Vegas and gets drunkenly married to a woman whose name she doesn’t know...until she does exactly that.

This one moment of departure from her stern ex-military father’s plans for her life has Grace wondering why she doesn’t feel more fulfilled from completing her degree. Staggering under the weight of her parent’s expectations, a struggling job market, and feelings of burnout, Grace flees her home in Portland for a summer in New York with the wife she barely knows.

In New York, she’s able to ignore all the constant questions about her future plans and falls hard for her creative and beautiful wife, Yuki Yamamoto. But when reality comes crashing in, Grace must face what she’s been running from all along - the fears that make us human, the family scars that need to heal and the longing for connection, especially when navigating the messiness of adulthood.

    Not Quite What I Expected

The book was good for sure, it just wasn’t what I expected. I guess reading the synopsis for the book gave it a more lighthearted, almost rom-com feel and while there were certainly some lighthearted, rom-com moments, that wasn’t the point of this book. It was heavy, much heavier than I expected. It dealt with topics such as self-harm, insecurity, race, sexuality, and so on. I do wish there was a disclaimer about the self-harm. It wasn’t graphic, but I know it can be quite triggering for some people.

The whole book felt REAL. For me, it wasn’t an escape. It was a head first dive into the depths of my own anxieties, my questioning about self-worth, the anger and sadness over our demons, and the frustration of trying to make it in a profession we weren’t meant to be in. Sometimes we need a book that doesn’t allow us to escape. We need a book to remind us we aren’t the only lonely people out there.

A gorgeous story about your young adulthood

No matter who you are, if you live through your 20s, you will identify with this story. Found family, identity, belonging, making your own way- it is universal for us all. I love the gorgeous cast of diverse characters I want to see more in books. I can’t wait to see what else Morgan Rogers writes.

    Beautifully Written

Honey Girl captures the beauty in broken people in a way I've never experienced in print before. The narration could have been better, but overall it is still a captivating story!

    Over hyped

It just wasn’t giving what y’all said it was supposed to gave. Felt like the storyline was going nowhere many times. Feels like so much was missing.

    good book, bad narration

I wish I had just read this in physical book form! The narrator makes the story drag and drag. Might be better if you speed up the narration?

Just OK & narration not my favorite.

This was just OK for me, but I believe that is due to my state of mind while trying to read it. I really think it portrayed having depression & anxiety in a realistic way. So much so that because I was dealing with those issues I had trouble finishing the book and I had to put it down & come back to it. I also enjoyed the theme of family that is not just blood. I think if I had read this at a different point in my life I might have enjoyed it more. Also it was rough listening to the narrator throughout the whole voice, at first I thought it was part of the character but then it just continued, it was quite annoying...it didn't help at all. I might have been able to get through it easier if I read it instead of listened to it.

    Monotone narrator

The Narration was rough. Story was unfortunately not strong enough to be able to look past it.
