Description

Five rituals to control Chaos. That’s all it takes.

Now that Harley knows her enemy’s grand plan - to become a godlike Child of Chaos and punish those deemed “unworthy” - she’s got to figure out what the heck to do about it. Many of the missing magicals are still out there, and Katherine has vowed to kill everyone Harley cares about and make her watch.

So that’s fun.

Just when it seems like things can’t get much worse, one of the most precious monsters of the Bestiary escapes, and Harley is sure that Katherine has her dirty hands involved. But that crazy witch had better be ready because Harley has finally figured out a way to unleash her powers - although the cost might not be worth it.

Astrid, a human living amongst magicals, is just as determined to thwart Katherine’s schemes. At the same time, her budding romance with the Coven’s trademark bad boy has earned her father’s disapproval, and it seems like betrayal is lurking around the corner....

I think I'm done.

I think I'm done with this series. The premise is good; I feel connected to the characters and I like how it feels as though the typical magic and typical superpowers are combined; I think that's very unique. However, it feels like the story is just not fully developed: the plot is predictable and the foreshadowing is so blatant, it's making it hard for me to want to continue. I think the narrator does a very good job, but feels as though the author split this story into waaay to many installments for the sake of profitability and I'm having a hard time wanting to spend more money on this series.

slow moving and poor character growth

the concept of the book is good. but there is 0 character growth outside "blooming love interest". characters keep making the same types of errors and choices from book to book. honestly, it's getting old. I'll stick with it because the plot is interesting. but I've stopped feeling sympathy or compassion for the characters. it's a little like watching to many nic cage movies. because there's no growth in the characters, you just kind of feel like you're on replay every time a new situation comes up.

Too Slow, Too Juvenile, Poorly Narrated but I’m still reading all of them?

Ok - so I have to give credit where it’s due and admit to the fact that despite my continuously low star rating, I have listened through 4 books and will likely finish the series.

So acknowledging the achievement in that, I will lay out my concerns.

(1) Why does the author insist on telling us things we literally just heard ten minutes ago? You don’t need to almost verbatim repeat the same points. Especially when each character already knows too and you’re not explaining their epiphanies to us.

(2) The narrator. I love how she does Harley and Alton. But everyone else, especially the accent work, is very sloppy, inconsistent and just plain wrong at times. I could not have done this better if my life depended on it. And I’m sure voicing this many characters is a challenging if not down right impossible job. But there are so many talented people putting out narrations on audible - maybe they would have been better suited to the challenge. I cannot differentiate between Astrid and Harley, the accents dip in and out for Tatiana and for others. I don’t know. It’s just kind of shotty work where another voice actor might have lent atmosphere to a somewhat lacking bit of writing.

(3) Which brings me to my last point. I’ve read books about 16 year olds that had more depth and development than this book about a supposed 19 year old. Granted, this does feel age appropriate where those books have seemed reaching for what a 16 year old might be like, but I was surprised at how juvenile the characters are at times, especially Harley.

Too short

For 1 credo there should be 2 of these books. The narrator is wonderful.and does an amazing job with the different characters. Took 5 books to make it to the fist kiss? There are 9 books? That’s a lot of credits and not sore the series is worth it.

Not super satisfied

Like other reviewers, the books feel incomplete.. I feel like 90% of it is stuck in boring mode and right when things start to get good and heated up.. the book ends.. I don’t mind books that end on a cliffhanger but there is no sense of completeness at the end. The author spread out a story line over waaay too many books.

Each time a book has ended, I go through the “should I really keep going” phase. After this book... I think I’m done.

Spoilers

I'm so glad this wasn't a repeat of the couple drama from the previous book. I enjoyed hearing from Astrid, but I don't feel that she's a fully enough developed character to really go in the direction Forrest is taking her (ie the void). That doesn't mean that I don't feel for her- she was fully ready to cross over, and now she's been ripped in two. Though, she kind of has powers now since she can hear the dead. Forrest's gone through all of the female voices of the Rag team, does that mean we're going to start hearing from the men now? Speaking of voices, I found it difficult to distinguish between Harley and Astrid- they sounded so much alike. In previous books Astrid had a more distinct voice that I didn't feel came through in her chapters in book 4. Excited to see what happens in New Orleans with Harley and Wade.

"Sorry" was annoyingly overused

Had enough of the characters saying sorry. The series has a good foundation, but there were times it felt like a Scooby Doo episode.

This one needed a stronger editor

Loved the series but this one was in dire need of some solid editing to tightening up the storyline

Oooo it's getting good

This book I couldn't stop listening to especially after the last one that tackled a lot of the cringy romance stuff) ... This one gives us more of Astrid's story which is great to know. The author is setting us up for some true Excitement.. I'm so ready for it... Lemme stop writing and get to the next one.

Author needs to learn the art of “show, don’t tell”

I really like the premise of this series so I keep listening, but I’m constantly frustrated with the author’s writing because she doesn’t seem to understand the you don’t have to lay it all out for the reader. I feel like she over explains things that really don’t need to be explained just to fill space. Possibly that she’s trying to up her word count to produce works faster.

Other than the obvious constantly shoved in your face, this series has a really cool plot. I love that magic and the modern world work together. She has a unique set of rules to the magic in this world and I love that there are living consequences for magic.

Harry Potter it isn't!

Way too American, way too creationistic!
It's an insult to compare this series to Harry Potter. "United covens of America"/ "Father of the free magicals"? And a stupid "heroine" who cannot see what's right in front of her.
Plus those "chaos rules" ideas are way too creationistic!!!!!
